Long-time NZTBA member Dennis Ryan, who is also one of New Zealand's most valued racing journalists, is a proud Dad.
Reason being, his daughter Siobhan is making final preparations for her challenge of a lifetime, riding in what is recognised as the world’s longest and toughest horse-race, the Mongol Derby.
Next month Siobhan, who mixes her day-job as a Government investment analyst with a showjumping team, will represent New Zealand in the grueling equine marathon across 1,000km of the Mongolian steppe.
She follows in the footsteps of a number of intrepid Kiwi equestrians to have competed in the unique race that each year brings together some 40 riders from around the world, all driven by that innate desire to push the boundaries.
It’s all for a good cause, in Siobhan’s case nominating New Zealand Riding for the Disabled as the charity she wants to benefit from her upcoming adventure.
“Riding for the Disabled is a cause close to my heart,” she says. “I have a five-year-old nephew on the autism spectrum, and he has the good fortune to have access to supervised riding experiences; it does wonders for him.
“By nominating Riding for the Disabled as my charity, I’m hoping to make a difference for others in the community whose health and well-being would benefit from the fantastic work the organisation provides.”
