The success of New Zealand-bred horses in the prestigious Group One Australian Derby (2400m) continues with Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry[IRE]-Extra Explosive) being the most recent winner.
In a true test of stamina, the son of the ill-fated Jakkalberry (Storming Home[GB]- Clara di San Jore[IRE]) got up to win in the last stride of the 2400 metre event. As they turned for home he was at least 10 wide and near the rear of the field, but he dug deep and ground home to beat fellow New Zealand-bred runners Young Werther (Tavistock-Romantic Time) and Lion’s Roar (Contributer[IRE]- Minnaleo).
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Explosive Jack followed a less traditional path into the Derby. He won on debut over 1600 metres in late November, before running fifth over 2100 metres at his next start. A month later he stepped up over 2400 metres when he won at Kembla Grange against the older horses before heading to Tasmania to take out the Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby in early February.
Five weeks later he lined up in the Gr.2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley where he finished third behind Grand Slam and Young Werther, and at the end of March he ran second to Liqueuro in the St Leger Trial at Bendigo. A fortnight later he was victorious in the Derby at only his seventh start.
Explosive Jack was bred by Luigi Muollo, the owner of Novara Park where Jakkalberry commenced his stallion career, and is from a family that has already produced a New Zealand Derby winner in Vin De Dance (Roc de Cambes-Explosive Girl) and numerous other stakes performers.
“It’s a very versatile family,” said a very delighted Muollo who is a committee member of the Wellington branch of the NZTBA.
“I bought Explosive as a yearling, and raced her and when she went to stud, she had six fillies in a row, I was cursing at the time but now I have all of them as broodmares. Every single one of those daughters have been winners and they have all produced winners or stakes performers.
“I have 10 of those mares and this year I had seven foals and six of them are by Staphanos(JPN) and the seventh is by Sweynesse,” he said of the stallions that stand at Novara Park.
Explosive was by Exploding Prospect(USA) and won three races and was placed in the Listed Castletown Stakes for Muollo before she went to stud. Extra Explosive (by Ekraar[USA]), the dam of Explosive Jack, was her third foal and first stakes winner winning the Listed Castletown Stakes, before retiring to stud.
At stud Extra Explosive has produced seven foals the first being a filly by Rip Van Winkle(IRE) in Moonshine Lucy who didn’t race before going to stud. Her next foal Pick Number One, a colt by Darci Brahma, won five races and was the Champion Griffin in Hong Kong in 2017-18. Her next foal a colt by Rip Van Winkle(IRE) was sold to China, and Muollo retained her next foal a filly by Per Incanto (USA) called Eruptive.
Explosive Jack is her fifth foal, her sixth foal is a colt by Time Test(GB) that sold for $65,000 at Karaka this year, she has a filly foal at foot by Staphanos(JPN) and is in foal to that stallion again.
Getting back to Explosive she produced nine named foals, six to race and five winners including Explosive Dancer (by San Luis) who won twice and was placed in the Listed Star Way Stakes, she in turn is the dam of Vin De Dance, the Joint Head of the New Zealand Three-Year-Old Free Handicap of the 2017-18 season who won the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby and running fourth in the Gr.1 ATC Derby and Rosehill Guineas.

Another winning daughter of Explosive, Ultra Explosive (by Darci Brahma) is the dam of Explosively (by Sweynesse[AUS]) a winner who was placed this season in the Gr.3 Almanzor Trophy and Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes before being sold to Hong Kong. While the unraced mares Only Explosive (One Cool Cat[USA]) and Explosive Girl (San Luis) have both left winning stakes performers in Short Fuse (by Per Incanto[USA]) and Jakkalbomb(by Jakkalberry[IRE]) respectively.
Explosive is out of the Beau Ghost(AUS) mare Tina’s Spirit herself a winner of two races at 1200 metres. She left six winners including The Red Express a full brother to Explosive who holds the record for the most number of wins at Riccarton racecourse. His 18 wins include the Gr.3 CJC Challenge Stakes, Listed Timaru Stakes, Great Easter Handicap, Welcome Stakes and Canterbury Stakes, and he was Group One placed at two in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.
When questioned on the mating of Explosive Jack, Luigi commented that the mating was definitely stout, with Jakkalberry being a renowned stayer who won up to 2400 metres and was placed third in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup.
“Explosive Jack was the best stayer on the day, the family can leave a good stayer or sprinter,” he commented.
“Jakkalberry didn’t reach his best potential here at stud, and the mating was a good balance of sire and dam. Ekraar(USA) is a very good broodmare sire, look at the result of the Sydney sale where Rising Romance left a million dollar yearling, and Shez Sinsational has left a stakes winner in Sinarahma, they were also both very good racemares.
“It is easy to breed to Explosive’s daughters if you don’t have any Danzig(USA) in the pedigree. Jakkalberry, Staphanos and Sweynesse are all free of Danzig.
“Everyone has their theories but really there are no rules. A good horse can come from anywhere. The best horse my Dad, who died last November, bred was Kingston Bay and he was by Kingdom Bay(AUS),” concluded the man who admits to studying pedigree pages and reading race results most evenings.
It is easy to see that with 10 mares from this family and Explosive Jack possibly heading to the South Australian and Queensland Derbys on the way to the Caulfield Cup, that Muollo is pretty excited about the future of this family particularly the six foals by his Deep Impact sire Staphanos.
“I can’t wait for those foals to hit the racetrack,” he enthused.
“When you look at what has been happening in Japan in the last two weeks. The Gr.1 Hansin Osaka Hai was won by Lei Papale who is by Deep Impact(JPN) out of Shells Lei(JPN) a daughter of the Kurofune(USA) which is the same cross as Staphanos(JPN) while Sodashi who won the Gr.1 Hanshin Oka Sho is by Kurofune(JPN). The second horse Satono Reinas was by Deep Impact(JPN) the third horse Fine Rouge is by Kizuna(JPN) who is by Deep Impact(JPN), the fourth horse Akaitorino Musiarre was by Deep Impact(JPN) and the fifth horse Art de Vivre is out of a Deep Impact(JPN) mare.
“He is the best stallion in the world he has sired 172 stakes winners and Japan has the lowest number of stakes races in the world. Only 1.4% of their races are stakes races and if he was standing anywhere else in the world, he would have triple that number.
“Staphanos(JPN) had a great race record although he only won four races he ran in three group one races in Japan and three in Hong Kong and was placed in them all. He’s very exciting and he is the highest stake earner at stud in New Zealand earning $NZ6.2 million. His foals are very athletic types; strong, balanced and with good brains, the best is yet to come.
“I have 35 mares and I am constantly upgrading them, and my brother Tony who bred Press Statement(AUS), Pressday and Hawkspur and raced Dundeel, is supporting me with 15 mares. We try and punch above our weight and look to do things better with our mares and foals.”
Muollo has enjoyed success with a number of other stakes performers recently and not all have been from the Explosive family.
This weekend Signora Nera, a Sweynesse filly he bred and races, will line up in the Gr.1 Australian Oaks at Randwick after finishing fifth in the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes last Saturday. She was third in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes in December and is out of Madonna Mia who won nine races including the Listed Wanganui Cup.
Muollo also bred the Wanganui Guineas winner Only Words (Sweynesse[AUS]- Jungle Pago) who is now with Chris Waller as well as Bonita Aurelia (Sweynesse[AUS]-Cassie May) the winner of the Gr.3 Woburn Farm 2YO Classic last season who bounced back to form winning an open handicap at Awapuni last week. -Michelle Saba, NZTBA
