On the back of the success by the stock of Redwood(GB) last weekend, Westbury Stud is looking forward to parading the son of High Chaparral(GB) at a Stallion Parade on Sunday 20th August organised by the Auckland Branch of the NZTBA.
As well as Redwood, six other stallions will be on show at Westbury Stud, Reliable Man(GB), Swiss Ace(AUS), El Roca(AUS), Postponed(USA) and new comers Tarzino and Telperion(AUS). The parade commences at 10.30am at nearby Haunui Farm where their new stallion Belardo(IRE) will be paraded along with Iffraaj(GB) and Showcasing(GB).
Following the parade, the Auckland Branch will be holding an awards luncheon at the NZB Karaka Sales Centre to honour their branch members who bred Group winners throughout the 2016-17 season. There were five Group One winners bred in the Auckland region; Bonneval, Jon Snow, La Diosa, Humidor, and Melody Belle. Other awards to be presented include Breeder of the Year and Broodmare of the Year. For the full Auckland Parade schedule and lunch details, please see itinerary at the bottom of the page.
Redwood(GB) has enjoyed a wonderful run of form with his first crop of foals, who are now four-year-olds; including the Listed Stakes winner Romancer, Derby runner-up Rising Red, St Leger place getter High Mode, and Rosewood. While the past weekend saw three individual winners for Redwood(GB) across Australasia with some excellent performances among them, suggesting that each of the horses have plenty of upside.
Prompted by this success Westbury Stud principal Gerry Harvey has decided to send high class race mare Royal Descent(AUS) to Redwood for her second year at stud, this will prove to be an excellent boost for the young sire and just reward for the outstanding run of form by his first crop runners recently.
Royal Descent (Redoute’s Choice[AUS]-Mulan’s Princess[AUS]) won five races including the Group One ATC Australian Oaks, the Group Two ATC Warwick Stakes and the Group Three Adrian Knox Stakes. She is currently in foal to Swiss Ace (AUS).
“It is obviously a huge boost for Redwood to have a mare like Royal Descent among his book this year. It is a very good mating on paper, and physically the mating should be very complementary,” stated Westbury Stud General Manager Russell Warwick.
“Redwood has done a great job to date and it is very rewarding to see a number of his progeny shaping up so well in Australia.”
Two of Redwood’s winners on the weekend came in Australia with Swampland winning her third race in succession in the A$100,000 VRC Member Mark Young Handicap at Flemington, for Caulfield trainer Henry Dwyer.
On Sunday leading trainer Darren Weir lined up the former Kiwi runner Nights Watch at Bendigo and after being posted four wide throughout the gelding was able to reel in the leader Duke of Nottingham and post a narrow but impressive win. Nights Watch had good form around Hall of Fame, Wyndspelle, and Jon Snow when lightly tried in New Zealand from the stable of Peter and Dawn Williams and Paul Richards.
The third winner for Redwood was the Graham Richardson/Gavin Parker trained Suliman who broke his maiden in impressive fashion over 2100m at Counties.
As well as Royal Descent(AUS), Harvey will also send Romantically(AUS), the dam of Romancer back to Redwood, along with Edie a Rock of Gibraltar(IRE) daughter of the Melbourne Cup winning mare Jezabeel. - Michelle Saba
