The 44th volume of the Register of Thoroughbred Stallions of New Zealand is in the letter boxes of all financial members of the NZTBA right now.
The 152 page soft bound book features the tabulated pedigrees of 79 stallions standing at stud in New Zealand along with their race and stud records and the statistics of their sires. It is crammed full of statistical data and stud information, location maps, and beautiful equine colour photography by Trish Dunell.
The book is highly sought after each year by breeders whether they are a commercial breeder or own just one mare, and provides vital information to guide breeders in the important investment decisions they must make each year to sustain New Zealand's successful thoroughbred breeding industry.
The comprehensive statistical data is crucial to the industry including sire premierships – both local and international, fertility figures, sales averages, award winners, free handicaps, industry statistics and a host of other useful information. The pedigree index alone which covers 16 pages features an alphabetical index of all the horses in the first five removes of the pedigrees of the advertised stallions.
As well all stallions standing at stud in New Zealand are listed in alphabetical order, under the sire's name, under their service fee, and in their regions.
This year's edition features a stunning head shot of the champion sire Savabeel(AUS), who once again at the end of this season will win all three local and international sires premierships; the Grosvenor (New Zealand earnings), the Dewar( Australia and New Zealand combined earnings), and the Centaine (worldwide earnings). Savabeel stands at Waikato Stud and this year he will be joined by the recently retired Tivaci(AUS) (High Chaparral [IRE]- Breccia), the winner of six races including the Group One ATC All Aged Stakes this autumn, and one of 11 new stallions that commence duties this year.
Auckland based studs Haunui Farm and Westbury Stud will also welcome new stallions to their ranks. Haunui will stand Belardo(IRE) (Lope De Vega[IRE]- Danaskaya[IRE]) the English and European Champion two-year-old of 2014 following his Dewhurst Stakes win at New market. He retired having won five races including the Newbury Lockinge Stakes as a four-year-old. He is the first son of the former French Champion three-year-old Lope De Vega (by Shamardal[IRE]) to stand at stud in New Zealand.
Westbury Stud is home to the dual Group One winner Tarzino who retired last spring due to injury. The son of Tavistock and the Zabeel mare Zarzino, won the Group One VRC AAMI Derby, Group One ATC Rosehill Guineas and two other races, before sustaining his career ending injury.
He will be joined at Westbury by Teleperion (IRE) a son of Street Cry(IRE) the sire of the Champion mare Winx. A winner of four races, he does not appear in the Stallion Register as he was announced after the publication had gone to print.
Wrote(IRE) also a son of High Chaparral(IRE) will stand at Highview Stud in Hamilton, he was another stallion that was announced after print date. He was the winner of the Group One Breeders Cup Juvenile in 2011 and also placed in the UAE Derby. Wrote is out of the Green Desert(GB) mare Desert Classic.
Further additions to the stallion ranks in the Waikato region include Turn Me Loose, Vanburgh(AUS) and Rageese(AUS) who will all stand at Windsor Park in Cambridge.
Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj[IRE]-Indomitable) is the winner of seven races, three at Group One level, and the Champion Sprinter and Middle Distance horse in New Zealand in 2015-16. He is the first son of Iffraaj, who this season left the Derby winners Jon Snow and Gingernuts, to retire to stud in New Zealand.
He will be joined by Vanburgh(AUS)(Encosta de Lago[AUS]-Soho Secret[AUS[[]) the winner of the Group One ATC Spring Champion Stakes and four other races, and Rageese (AUS) a Group One placed winner of four races, by Street Cry(IRE) out of Rabsha.
Over in Matamata Rich Hill Stud will welcome the French bred stallion Vadamos (FR) a son of Monsun (GER) and the stakes winning mare Celebre Vadala(FR). Vadamos is a Group One winner in France and was also successful at Group Two level in Germany, in all he won eight races.
Another Matamata based property Mapperley Stud will welcome Puccini (Encosta de Lago[AUS]- Miss Opera) to their ranks. The 2013-14 Champion three-year-old won eight races including the Group One New Zealand Derby and Group Two Avondale and Great Northern Guineas.
While Verdi his winning half-brother by Zabeel, will be the only addition to the stallion ranks in the South Island and will join Remind(USA) at Long Acres Stud in Darfield just out of Christchurch.
