It's shaping up to be an exciting summer for Waikato NZTBA branch member Celia Crawshaw the breeder of Lincoln Blue (Savabeel[AUS]- Prickle) the winner of the Listed Race For Life 3YO Salver at Ellerslie recently.
That win bounced him right into New Zealand Derby contention on the back of a gutsy win in the Group Three Wellington Stakes last month.
Crawshaw owns Prickle (Pins[AUS]-Snobbish) whom her brother Mark Chittick purchased specifically for her to send to Savabeel when he was syndicated around 10 years ago
"She has been an extremely good mare for me and Lincoln Blue is the third Stakes winner she has produced, and could be her second Derby winner. Once again this year she has produced a lovely colt to Savabeel and is back in foal to him and I have a yearling in the Premier sale to sell next month," she said.
Prickle has now had nine foals, eight of them by Savabeel with six to race and six to win including the Queensland Triple Crown winner Brambles (Gr.1 Queensland Derby, Gr.3 Grand Prix and Rough Habit Stakes) and the Lopov a Listed winner of seven races. Praecereus, Suguaro and Rosehip have each won two races and Lincoln Blue has won three.
Her only foal not by Savabeel Rehab (Fast'N'Famous) injured herself before she could race and has produced an O'Reilly filly for Waikato Stud and Crawshaw, which is in the Premier Sale and an Ocean Park foal.
When Waikato Stud syndicated Savabeel, Celia and her sister Tania each got a share, and Mark set about buying them a couple of mares each to send to the stallion. Waikato Stud had sold Prickle to Paul O'Sullivan for $75,000 and after she had proved herself on the track and was retired from racing,Mark bought her back for Celia.
As a racehorse Prickle won three races and was second in the Listed Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie and third in the Group Three Wakefield Challenge Stakes. She is a sister to Legsman who won five races including the Listed ATC Winter Cup, and a half-sister to Tell Someone (O'Reilly) the grandam of the Group Two winner Traitor.
They in turn are out of Snobbish, a sister to the multiple Group One winner Slight Chance, herself the dam of Dane Shadow and Salgado, and to Slightly Aloof the grandam of Sharp Princess (Pins[AUS]). Their dam was the Listed Manawatu Stakes winner Lady Aloof (Sir Godfrey[FR]-Miss Coventry) one of the foundation mares of Waikato Stud.
"Savabeel had a massive weekend, he has been an amazing stallion for Waikato Stud," said Crawshaw alluding to the fact that Cold Play, also by Savabeel, won the Group Two Cal Isuzu Stakes at Te Rapa adding to her two previous Group Three victories.
"With Prickle I just keep going back to him, back to the well so to speak, the cross with Savabeel works so well, she is 15 now so I don't know how many more foals she will produce. I will carry on and maybe get a filly, I would dearly love to have a filly I could race.
"Mind you every time I have raced one it's been a disaster I would like to have at least one that wins a couple of races, I am not greedy it doesn't have to be a Stakes winner. I raced Lolly she won one and then killed herself in the paddock, she was out of my other mare Lightning Spirit who has also left a Stakes winner by Savabeel in You're So Good".
"I have even taken shares in a filly with Mark as he is the lucky one in the family, so I am hoping it will rub off. Her name is "Winehouse", a No Excuse Needed (USA) filly out of Singing Star, and Philip and I are racing it with Mark, Vermair Racing and Hamish and Sarah Whyte, who part- owned Singing Star through the Ask Partnership".
"She is a half-sister to the Group Two winner Miss Selby and is in work with Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards, so hopefully we can have some fun."
In the meantime Crawshaw will be hoping for a successful sale and keeping a close eye on the Derby contenders. – Michelle Saba
