It's been a great couple of weeks for the super consistent Waikato Stud stallion Pins(AUS) (Snippets[AUS]-No Finer[AUS])with three Stakes winners on the board already this season.
That comes as no surprise to Waikato Stud General Manager Mark Chittick who maintains he is a great stallion.
"Pins consistently leaves Stakes winners, and winners. Each season he has around 10-12 Stakes winners, and always has a good horse on the go either here or in Australia or Hong Kong. Over the last ten years he has ranked in the top five stallions every year".
"Already this season he has had three group winners, including the two new three-year-old fillies Honey Rider (ex Southern Heights) and Legless Veuve (ex Hyades), and Mackintosh (ex Lolly Scramble) has won a Group Two to add to the two Group Three events he won last season. It looks like Aerovelocity is back on track in Hong Kong as well."
Honey Rider won the Group Three Hawkes Bay Breeders Gold Trail Stakes beating another Pins filly Glass Slipper (ex Fairy Tale), and a week later Legless Veuve was very impressive winning the Group Two Caulfield Guineas Prelude, beating last year's Group One Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes winner Luna Rossa (Written Tycoon[AUS]-Wild Promises[AUS]).
Legless Veuve was a $150,000 purchase by Aquanita Stables, from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2015 Premier Yearling Sales.
"She always was a nice filly right from the start and she grew into a bloody nice filly by the time she got to be a yearling. Being a full sister to Tootsie and a good looker, she was always going to sell well and it's great to see that she has lived up to expectations".
"Hyades the mare herself is a funny mare, she has one small foal and then the next foal is really big, however she did do a nice job on this one. It's a lovely family and one of our original families going back to Georgina Belle".
Legless Veuve is the tenth foal from Hyades and the sixth by Pins. Hyades best performer is the Group One placed Tootsie the winner of seven races including the Group Three Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield and the Listed Waikato RC Sprint.
Her first foal Beyond by Centaine(AUS) won four races and is the dam of Far Fetched a Stakes placed winner of three races and Eternity a winner of four, both of whom are by Pins. Another foal Aldebaran Star by No Excuse Needed [GB] is the winner of six races.
Hyades is currently in foal to Ocean Park and is scheduled to go back to him, but that may yet change and she will once again return to Pins.
She is an unraced daughter of O'Reilly out of the Habat(GB) mare Habania, and is thus a three-quarter sister to Maggie O'Reilly – the dam of No Excuse Maggie(No Excuse Needed)- and a half-sister to the Stakes winners La Rose Noir and Urbane and the Stakes placed winners Habane and Double Roy.
Habania was bred by Garry Chittick she was out of Georgina Belle (Pakistan II[GB]-Castle Belle) a Stakes placed winner who had gone to the States to race, and was one of his early broodmare acquisitions. From the States she was sent to England where she was mated to Habat to Southern Hemisphere time with the resulting foal being Habania.

Georgina Belle's first New Zealand bred foal was the Sound Reason(CAN) mare Celia Leigh and from that family Waikato Stud have produced some outstanding race horses including Glamour Puss, Starman, Rare Insight, Vision and Power, Escadaire , and Arenti to name a few. As well as Crepe de Chine, Pin Rouge, and Glam Slam all of whom happen to be by Pins.
"We still have a lot of this family it has been a great family for us. Just in this branch we have some lovely mares, including Tootsie, Beyond, Far Fetched and Eudora.
"Tootsie is due to Savabeel and will return to him, and the same with Far Fetched. Beyond has an Ocean Park colt, and an Ocean Park yearling to go to Karaka this year, and Eudora has a Savabeel colt at foot and is going to Ocean Park."
