On the eve of the end of her four-year-old racing season, Awapuni mare Elusive Boxers won the NZB Insurance Pearl Series 1200 metre event at Oamaru last Sunday.
It was the final Pearl Series Bonus race of the season, and a $20,000 level A bonus to boot.
"We set her for this race, it was a $25,000 race with a $20,000 bonus that's like winning a $65,000 race, and with her rising five it was her last chance to a win a bonus" according to Albert Bosma the racing manager for the Go Racing syndicates who race the mare from Lisa Latta's stable.
The NZB Insurance Pearl Bonus Series is a bonus Scheme for fillies and mares offering bonuses of almost $2.6 million and prizemoney of nearly $2.8 million across 215 individual races for fillies and mares racing as two, three and four-year olds. Elusive Boxers is from the first group of fillies enrolled in the scheme in 2012.
Enrolments for the 2016 series close with the NZTBA on the 31st of July 2016, and already there are 438 yearling fillies entered in the scheme following the Early bird nominations which closed at the end of February.
"To date we have won five bonuses, but this is the first A level bonus of $20,000 that we have won. The other bonuses have all been B level bonuses of $11,500 at midweek meetings, but they are all worth winning.
"What made it even more exciting for us was the way she won the race. She killed them, going away and winning by four and a half lengths. After winning that race so dominantly she can go for a spell, she had been racing well without much luck leading into that win. She has taken a while to mature and is not a wet tracker so I think we will see a lot more from her next time in."
Go Racing was formed in 2003 by former school mates Pat Vinaccia and Albert Bosma, with their first syndicate called the Not Enough Taro syndicate, after a social rugby team that Bosma was involved with. Half of the rugby team joined the syndicate and in keeping with the island theme started sporting matching Polynesian themed shirts when they attended to the races.
Their first horse was the very successful Silky Red Boxer and you guessed it they started sporting them at the races as well. On the back of that success they formed the Go Racing Not Enough Taro Too syndicate and purchased a Danske filly and called her Boxer Fluffies, she went on to win four races before they sent her to stud.
"About half of the original Not Enough Taro syndicate are still involved in the syndicate that races the mare now the Go Racing Not Enough Taro Too Syndicate," said Bosma, "the other partners are in a syndicate called Go Racing Not Enough Taro Three, who comprise the newcomers who bought into her as a yearling. - Michelle Saba
