A chat with New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock was enough for central districts studmaster Mark Corcoran to take on The Bold One.
"I was approached by the syndicate - Eddie Bourke and the Dennis brothers – about standing him and then I had a talk to Allan and he convinced me, he rated him very highly and thought he was a Group One horse in the making," Corcoran said.
As a result, the regally-bred The Bold One will begin his stallion career in 2016 at Grangewilliam Stud at Waitotara, south of Wanganui.
"He's a lovely-looking horse and unfortunately we never saw the best of him," Corcoran said.
"He's got a fantastic pedigree and in his first four dams there are four Broodmares of the Year – The Pixie in 1981, The Fantasy in 1994 and The Grin in 2003.
"Also, his family is full of top dam-sires O'Reilly, Grosvenor, Noble Bijou, Mellay and Kurdistan."
Bred in New Zealand by the Dennis brothers, The Bold One is a son of the champion stallion Fastnet Rock and the dual Group One NZ 1000 Guineas and Waikato International Stakes winner The Jewel.
He won four of his 14 starts from Sharrock's stable and weighed in a further eight times, including a third placing in the Listed Levin Stakes and fourth in the Gr.3 Cambridge Breeders' Stakes.
"He is by the best sire and he's a gorgeous horse," Sharrock said. "He was a very talented horse andI would send a mare to him."
The Bold One will stand at $2000 + GST alongside Zed, Haradasun and Dial A Prayer. – NZ Racing Desk.
