After the 2001 NZ One Thousand Guineas G1 and Bayer Classic G1 last month a few people can attest to the truth of that particular piece of breeder's wisdom.
Graeme & Helen-Gaye Bax of Blandford Lodge, and Australian breeder Arthur Mitchell bought Logical Lady (Sound Reason-Society Bay), now the dam of dual Group One winner Final Destination (by Waikato Stud's O'Reilly), for $100,000 at Millfield Stud's broodmare dispersal at the NZB Spring Bloodstock Sale in August this year. She is foaling to Rich Hill Stud's Bahhare this season.
Sold as a weanling for $9,000 to Jim Mead, Final Destination was re-sold to Ted Van Beurden for $20,000 at the 2000 NZ Millennium Fillies Sale and gave him his very first win as an owner when she scored at healthy odds in the NZ 1000 Guineas. In case anyone thought that was a fluke, she repeated that performance at Otaki in the Bayer Classic, this time beating the boys as well as the girls. Her performances echo the quality of her grand-dam Society Bay, a high-class racemare who won six races including the VRC Edward Manifold S. G2 and MVRC Veuve Clicquot S. G2.
Final Destination's breeder Peter Setchell and his late brother Graeme bred, raced and trained Society Bay who was bought back by Peter for sentimental reasons at the Millfield dispersal. She has a promising three-year-old filly named Rezidencia (by Carnegie) in Queensland, and an unraced two-year-old filly by O'Reilly named Irish Belle (purchased at the 2001 NZ Premier Yearling Sale by Mark Walker for $35,000). To Peter's delight, Society Bay recently foaled a chestnut filly by Gold Brose and visits Carnegie. Peter will offer Final Destination's half-brother by Centaine in the Java Lodge draft at the 2002 NZ Premier Yearling Sale.
Interestingly, the two best current performers descended from Society Bay are both by sons of Last Tycoon. He is Final Destination's paternal grand-sire and fills the same spot in the pedigree of four-year-old gelding Society Beau (Bigstone-Society Bay), winner of three of his five starts last season from the Mark Walker stable. These matings were done partly in the hope of line-breeding to the female family of La Troienne, described by pedigree analyst Leon Rasmussen as "the foundation mare of America's most celebrated family."
Peter Setchell remembers the weanling Final Destination as "not big but quite solid". Her dam was good enough to win her only start, ironically defeating another Setchell-bred filly, Centimental who is the dam of The Player (also by O'Reilly), a winner and Group 3-placed this season.
Success as a breeder is nothing new for Peter who is also responsible for recent-season stakeswinners Paradiddle, Java Magic and Tristachine and sixteen years ago achieved fame as the breeder of Australian Horse of the Year Red Anchor.
