Eight wins gave Colin Jillings and Richard Yuill a comfortable win on the trainers' table at the four-day Lion Red Summer Carnival. Sedecrem contributed two of those victories including the Highview Stud Trophy G2; Marcurous added the Novotel Ellerslie Newmarket Handicap LR before running third in the Sky City Railway Stakes G1; and Foxette took out the $150,000 Mercedes Super Bonus Fillies Prelude. Sir Kinloch, Critic, Diamond Hill and Dragon Tiger completed a very satisfying week of premier racing for the Takanini stable.
The training partnerships of Stephen & Trevor McKee and Mike Moroney & Andrew Scott registered three wins each, and the Moroney/Scott tally included the Jerry Clayton BMW Eclipse Stakes G3 won by Ubiquitous.
Paul O'Sullivan, who currently leads the national premiership with 41 wins, had two Carnival winners, Zafar and Desperate. Craig & Frank Ritchie, based alongside the McKees and Jillings/Yuill at Takanini, won with Able Attempt (King's Plate G3) and hurdler Jockular. Matamata trainerVanessa Hillis also won two races, with Palawaan and Roger Ramjet, as did Moira Murdoch, with Ascending (who dead-heated with Palawaan) and Maajin Buu.
It was a good Carnival for Ruakaka owner-trainer-breeders with Egyptian Raine winning the Railway Handicap G1 from the stable of Kenny Rae and El Duce claiming the Queen Elizabeth Handicap G2 for Donna Logan.
And Woodville had every excuse for celebration when Neil Connors won the Lion Red Auckland Cup G1 with Bodie, and Bruce & Stephen Marsh scored with Hail in the Zabeel Classic G1.
Waikato stables took out the remainder of the meeting's feature races: Chris McNab (G1 St Reims), Don Sellwood (G2 Natalie Wood) and Jim Gibbs (G2 Lafleur).
