Studmaster David Benjamin was a happy man at Ellerslie yesterday after Hail completed a notable Group One double for Fayette Park Stud, Matamata by winning the weight-for-age Zabeel Classic over 2000 metres. The stud also bred Wednesday's Lion Red Auckland Cup winner Bodie in partnership with Kevin Mischefski. Both horses are by resident Fayette Park sire Stark South who is steadily compiling a respectable record as a source of quality stamina and excellent temperament.
Established 15 years ago by David and his Kentucky-born wife Masey, Fayette Park has had a vintage couple of years, producing a third Group One winner, Elevenses, as well as G3 winner Schmooze (with Mrs Y.M. Brosnan) and champion jumper Rand (with Ian Cunningham & Colin Waller).
Fayette Park's shuttle stallion Prized joined the action with a winner on the Carnival's second day, My Prized Miss; Enterprize at Tauherenikau yesterday; and three-year-old filly Prized Jewel at Hastings on New Year's Day. Fayette Park will present a 36-strong draft for the New Zealand Yearling Sales which begin at Karaka on 27 January.
The remaining black-type races at the Carnival were spread around a number of major stud and private breeders:
Cambridge Stud's Sir Patrick & Lady Hogan bred the Mercedes New Zealand Derby G1 winner St Reims (Zabeel).
Trainer Kenny Rae bred and races Sky City Railway S. G1 winner Egyptian Raine (Desert Sun) in partnership with Chris Ball, Mal Barratt and Nick Rodokal.
Peter & Philip Vela are owner-breeders of Lafleur (Zabeel) who won the Royal Stakes G2, sponsored by the Vela-owned New Zealand Bloodstock.
Donna Logan not only bred but also trains and co-owns G2 winner El Duce (Lord Ballina).
Windsor Park Stud bred the Eight Carat Classic G2 winner Natalie Wood (Yachtie).
Highview Stud Trophy G2 winner Sedecrem (Faltaat) was bred by Phil Newsom, also the co-breeder of ill-fated Group One-placed mare Gold City.
Tim & Karen Bodle's Whakanui Stud bred G3 Able Attempt (Spectacular Love).
Auckland breeder Richard Moore is the breeder of the Jerry Clayton BMW Eclipse S. G3 winner Ubiquitous (Tale Of The Cat), yet another good horse descended from the Moore family's famous foundation mare Princess Patine.
Messrs W.E. Hosnell, M.R. & R.J. Orr are responsible for Novotel Ellerslie Newmarket Handicap LR winner Marcurous (Maroof).
