Elections in all three regions have produced a new-look council for the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, with strong representation from the under-45 age-group. The results, announced at last night's Annual General Meeting in Auckland, were:
Northern Region
John Thompson, 379 votes
Peter Francis 370 votes
Mark Chitty 364 votes
Nelson Schick 345 votes
John Clydesdale, 294 votes, was not elected.
Central Region
Michael Ormond, 220 votes
Bruce Perry, 197 votes
Tom Burn, 153 votes, was not elected.
Southern Region
Ray Dennis, 104 votes.
Glyn Morris received 28 votes and was not elected.
The new councillors are:
Mark Chitty, 35, Haunui Farm, Auckland; member of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing Board, and the commmittee of the NZTBA Auckland branch.
John Thompson, 41, Rich Hill Stud, Matamata; has just completed two years as president of the NZTBA Waikato branch.
Bruce Perry, 39, bloodstock agent, of Bruce Perry Bloodstock Ltd, Masterton.
Along with sitting members Mark Chittick, 32, and Sam Williams, 33, they give a distinctly youthful look to the 2003-04 Council.
At its first meeting, held this morning, the new Council elected Peter Hutt for his second year as President, Mark Chitty as Vice-President and Peter Francis, Treasurer. Because Nelson Schick was elected this year as a regional councillor, the Studmaster Branch seat on the council is vacant until a new representative is elected. In the meantime, the branch appointed Russell Warwick, Westbury Stud, to represent it at today's meeting.
At last night's AGM Peter Hutt paid tribute to retiring councillors John Aubrey and Rick Williams, and to the councillors defeated in the election, Tom Burn and John Clydesdale. Collectively these four men have given almost 30 years of service to the NZTBA Council and all have made valuable contributions to board-table discussions and many areas of the industry including bloodstock taxation, education and marketing.
