An unraced grand-daughter of a US Broodmare of the Year, a two-race winner and a stakes-winning grand-daughter of a New Zealand Broodmare of the Year are this year's Broodmare title finalists.
This award is decided by the NZTBA Council after it receives the recommendation of a three-person panel appointed by the Council to compile and consider nominations. This year's panel was: Chas Amon (Arion Pedigrees), Tim Barton (Dominion Post) and Justin Blackburne (Keeper of the New Zealand Stud Book).
The award is made to the mare "whose New Zealand bred progeny, anywhere in the world, in the season under review, most clearly reflect true breeding merit in quality of racing performance." The award is accepted by the last registered New Zealand owner(s) of the mare.
The Broodmare of the Year title was first awarded in 1953 when it was won by Broiveine, dam of 1952 Melbourne Cup winner Dalray. Subsequent three-time winners of the award are Eight Carat (1995, 1996, 1997) and Songline (2000, 2001 and 2002). Two-time award winners are: Sunbride (1961 & 1968), Taiona (1981 & 1983), Imitation (1986 & 1987) and Benediction (1998 & 1999). The award does not have to be made every year if, as in 1960, the Council decides no mare is worthy of it.
The 2003 finalists, with their 2002-03 season performers, are:
