Three of Australia's better three-year-olds during the 2001-02 season are among the twenty stallions listed for the NZTBA Stallion Expo at Karaka this Sunday 24 August.
They are Don Eduardo (AJC Australian Derby G1; Timeform Equivalent Rating: 118), Viking Ruler (AJC Spring Champion S. G1; TFE: 122) and Ustinov (MVRC AAMI Vase G2; TFE: 122).
Although only Don Eduardo, sold at Karaka in 2000 for an Australasian record price of $3.6 million, was bred in New Zealand, all three horses have strong Kiwi connections. Both Viking Ruler (Danehill-Tristalove) and Don Eduardo (Zabeel-Diamond Lover) are from Cambridge Stud's world-famous Eight Carat family. Ustinov is by Seeking The Gold from champion Let's Elope, one of four New Zealand-bred mares to win the Australian Horse of the Year title since 1969. (The others are Leilani, Surround and Sunline.)
They'll be joined by six other stallions parading for the first time at the Expo which is organised by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. Apart from giving broodmare owners an excellent opportunity to inspect a large number of stallions at a single venue, the Expo is an important fundraiser for NZTBA Auckland. The entry fee of $5 per person helps to fund the branch's sponsorship of the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' S. G2, and its hospitality to NZTBA members at Pukekohe in November.
The entry fee includes the programme which doubles as a ticket in a Lucky Draw for $1000 of feed from NRM. The draw will be made after the last horse parades.
Start time is 11.00 am, with a break for lunch at around 12.30 pm. The Expo includes several stud & trade stands, and visitors are also invited to consider membership of the NZTBA!
