Australian-bred Lashed (Encosta de Lago-Traffic Watch by Salieri) under-lined last season's Australian three-year-old form with a stylish victory in the ARC Zabeel Classic 2000m G1 on the final day of a most enjoyable Ellerslie Summer Carnival.
She defeated New Zealand Group One winner Penny Gem (by Pentire) and the ultra-consistent eight-year-old Group Two winner El Duce (by Lord Ballina) in a time of 2:02.62.
Lashed, who returned the race sponsorship and then some to her owner Lady Hogan of Cambridge Stud, had previously won four races and more than $A700,000 from 21 starts in Australia.
The Zabeel Classic was only her third start this season but she was given plenty to do as a three-year-old, running 12 times in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, all in Group races, from September to May. Lashed won only once last season but was placed eight times including a half-length second in Bulla Borghese's VRC Oaks G1. In the autumn she ran second to La Bella Dame in the MRC Angus Armanasco S. G3, won the VRC Kewney S. G2 and ran second again, this time to Ribe in the Moonee Valley Oaks G3. That was on top of her seven starts as a two-year-old which produced three wins, most notably the SAJC Sires' Produce S. 1600m G3 in May 2002.
Lashed's dam is an unraced half-sister to G2 sprinter-miler Swiftly Carson and to wonder broodmare Pride Of Tahnee, dam of Group One winners Singing The Blues (by Bluebird), Referral (by Dr Grace) and the much-loved Shogun Lodge (by Grand Lodge). These three horses won fifteen Group races among them, five at Group One level.
All of this form lay ahead of Traffic Watch when she appeared at the 1996 Australian Easter Broodmare Sale and was sold for $A6,000 to Mrs C.M. Upjohn of New South Wales. She bred Lashed, who was sold at the 2001 Melbourne Premier yearling sale for $A40,000 to Lloyd Williams who later sold her privately to the Hogans. Traffic Watch then had a Rubiton colt named Rubiwatch, a colt by Last Tycoon and, in 2002, another chestnut filly to Encosta de Lago. She delivered a second sister to Lashed, this time a bay, in October 2003.
Lashed is one of 14 stakeswinners, and three Group One winners by VATC Vic Health Cup G1 winner Encosta de Lago (by Fairy King from a Star Way half-sister to Flying Spur), who stands at Blue Gum Farm, Victoria at a 2003 fee of $A35,000. He has just one yearling at Karaka 2004: Chequers Stud's filly from a half-sister to New Zealand Derby G1 winner Roysyn and SW Pastel at the Premier Sale.
