Peter Francis (Auckland Branch) has been elected as the new President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. Mark Chitty (Auckland Branch) remains Vice President.
In accepting the presidency, Peter Francis said "I'm both honoured and excited to take over as president of the NZTBA at this time. Thoroughbred breeding and racing issues are making the news and we have a real chance of making the vital changes needed to position our industry, and the thousands of people it employs, for the future."
"Over recent years many passionate and dedicated thoroughbred people have contributed to a number of reports to successive governments, highlighting the need to rectify taxation anomalies and ensure that consistent taxation principles are applied to the total gaming sector."
"Past governments have made promises to rectify these inequalities, but have failed to deliver. Thoroughbred breeding and racing has become a significant election issue this year and later this month the NZTBA will be sending out details of the main parties' policies to all its members and the wider thoroughbred industry," he said.
"I urge everyone associated with the thoroughbred industry to read this information and to cast your votes with the best interest for our industry's future in mind," Mr Francis said.
The NZTBA Council for 2005-2006 was announced at the Association's Annual General Meeting held in Auckland on Friday 1 July 2005. Two new members have replaced retiring members Nelson Schick (Northern Region) and Mick Ormond (Central Region). They are Waikato memberPaul Smithies and Duncan Fell from the Central Districts. Immediate Past President Peter Hutt has been appointed as the NZTBA's Director on the Board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.
The Council now comprises:
Northern Region: Mark Chittick, Mark Chitty, Peter Francis, John Thompson and Paul Smithies
Central Region: Duncan Fell, Bruce Perry, and Sam Williams
South Island: Ray Dennis and Peter Hutt
Studmaster Branch: Brent Taylor
David Benjamin (Waikato Branch) was honoured with Life Membership of the NZTBA for his considerable contribution to the work of the Association over 35 years. David and his wife Masey are retiring from their full time stud operation, having recently sold their Cambridge property, Fayette Park.
