Chief Bearhart, sire of G2 Shikoba & SW Borninthestates
Former Glenmorgan Farm sire and Breeders' Cup Turf winner Chief Bearhart today added black type wins from both ends of the country to his rapidly progressing record.
At Ellerslie three-year-old filly Shikoba (ex Summary by Tierce; bred by Stuart & Suzanne Murray and The Micaela Murray Trust) won the ARC Ladies Mile 1600m G2, with Avondale Guineas winner Pulcinella (Stravinsky) and Gaze (Cape Cross) completing a trifecta for shuttle stallions. It was Shikoba's third win from six starts and followed her nose defeat by Wahid in the Levin Classic G1, sixth in Seachange's CJC NZ 1000 Guineas G1 and victory in the CJC Canterbury Belle S. LR in September. The filly began the season in Mark Walker's Rangiora stable, moving to his Matamata base after the New Zealand Cup Carnival.
The Murrays purchased Summary for $A60,000 in 2001 on the advice of Auckland bloodstock agent, now Stoney Bridge general manager, Peter Jenkins. Herself a non-winner, she's from the highly regarded Australian family of champion three-year-old and very good sire Zeditave, and, more recently, champion South African colt Greys Inn. Summary has a two-year-old daughter by Zabeel, named Mareva, and was foaling this season to Keeper.
A few hours later at Wingatui Borninthestates (ex Emanation by Iades; bred by Dr E.C. Lim) took out the ORC Dunedin Guineas 1600m LR from Mystify (Montjeu) and Southern Courage (Bahhare). It was the three-year-old gelding's third win on end, and the second win on the card for jockey Chris Johnson.
Borninthestates was sold for $19,000 to Brian Jenkins at the 2004 NZ Festival Yearling Sale, but races from the stable of Michael Pitman in Christchurch. As his name suggests, both sides of his pedigree have a strong American flavour. His third dam Windy Mama is a stakes-winning half-sister to Royal Owl (12 wins, incl. Santa Anita Charles H Strub S. G1).
By Chief's Crown, Chief Bearhart was twice named Canadian Horse of the Year and won the US Champion Turf Horse title after claiming the 1997 Breeders' Cup Turf G1 at Hollywood Park with one of the devastating late finishes for which he was noted. He retired in 1998 as the winner of 12 races and $US3.2 million, and four years later was inducted to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. His racing style and top-level competitiveness up to 2400 metres at four and five indicate that his progeny should do even better as they mature and step up in distance.
Chief's Crown is also the sire of Istidaad, whose outstanding daughter Justa Tad won last year's New Zealand Oaks G1 over 2400 metres; and in Australia, Grand Lodge (sire of this season's Spring Champion S. G1 winner Hotel Grand) and Beautiful Crown.
Chief Bearhart has now produced three stakeswinners from the 51 foals in his first southern hemisphere crop – the other is Bearable, winner of the ORC Champagne S. LR at two. In all he's had five winners of ten races from 15 New Zealand starters.
He has also sired three Group winners, including Group One-winning juvenile Meiner Recolte, from his first three crops in Japan where he is now permanently based after shuttling to the Jenkins family's Glenmorgan Farm from 2001 to 2003.
Only one member of Chief Bearhart's third and final New Zealand crop will be offered at the 2006 NZ National Yearling Sales: Lot 634 in the Select Sale, a half-brother to good stayer All's Well.
