Mrs Joan Nally, a New Zealand breeder of distinction passed away on Monday, aged 86.
Mrs Nally was not a major breeder by any stretch of the imagination, but she and her family have influenced the industry in many positive and tangible ways. She was the sister of the late Bill Myers, making her an aunt to trainer Kevin Myers and Patrick Myers, the father of the rising young Central Districts apprentice Kelly Myers.
She was the mother-in-law to Jim Wallace from the long standing Masterton based Ardsley Stud, and the mother of Upper Hutt breeder Brian Nally.
The Ardsley Stud connection was carried through to Mrs Nally's one thoroughbred breeding family with her Group I winner Acushla Marie being by Lord Ballina, the stallion that Ardsley Stud stood for many years until his death in July 2004.
Acushla Marie (ex Siob'han Marie, by Forty Winks II) won 11 times, including the STC Winfield Classic G1, and the VRC Francis Tressady Stakes G3 and the MVRC Diamond Jubilee Stakes G3. She was the half-sister to five-times winner, and VRC Derby G1 placegetter, Clovelly Bay (English Harbour), and 10-time winner, and stakes placed, Tramore Bay (English Harbour).
Recent yearling sales of Acushla Marie's progeny have included Prince Eiram (Marie spelt backwards) (Desert King), and Irish Opera (Stravinsky), the recent winner of a two-year-old trial.
This is also the family of stakes winner, and Group I placed, Kalamata, and the four-times winner, and twice Group II placed, Lord Erin.
"Our family have fond memories to retain, and the horses will leave a wonderful lasting legacy," said Brian on Tuesday.
The New Zealand thoroughbred industry has been sustained by such breeders as Joan Nally, and the industry is the poorer without her.
