Wednesday's Avondale Cup G1 winner Creil can't be described as fashionably-bred, but her pedigree does feature plenty of winners, including others at Group One level.
Bred by Cambridge Hunt Ltd, the six-year-old is a daughter of Hollywood Turf Cup G1 winner Frenchpark (Fools Holme-Piffle by Shirley Heights), resident at Bill Borrie's Richfield Thoroughbred Farm, Te Kauwhata, since 1996. He has left only two stakeswinners, Creil and Listed Stakes winner Chokin Stardust, from seven crops of racing age, but those crops total only 156 foals and so far none of his 14 current two-and three-year-olds have reached the racetrack. Frenchpark's 2005 service fee is $2,500.
Creil's dam Fortiare is by Shearwalk, who couldn't produce more than two stakeswinners from almost 200 foals during his entire eleven-year stud career. He's doing a better job as a sire of broodmares, as Creil becomes the second stakeswinner from 105 foals left by his daughters. The other is Voltaire (Volksraad), twice winner of the WRC Thompson H. G3.
Creil's female line has a more impressive strike-rate. Fortiare was a winner at 1400 metres, and three of her four foals are winners, including Creil's talented full-brother Camberobero.
Second dam Without Effort (by champion Australian sire Without Fear) won at two in Melbourne and of her six foals, four have won, among them SW Superb Effort.
Third dam Eloquent (Better Boy) won nine races, most of them at Caulfield. Five of her six foals also won, and the best of them was Western Australian Oaks G1 winner Badinage. Eloquent's sole non-winner, Approvetor, is the dam of G2 winner and G1-placed Congressman, and of Raffett, dam of outstanding dual G1 winner Skating. Sent to End Sweep and Redoute's Choice, Skating has left the stakeswinners Sunset Run and Bradbury's Luck.
Although Creil's form has steadily improved in the past 12 months, she was good enough to win her debut at Waipukurau as a three-year-old, and last season ran fourth in Group 3 races won by the good mares Bhandara and Tickle. Her two runs before the Avondale Cup were excellent, producing a third to Lilakyn in the Feilding Gold Cup LR and a second to Kerry O'Reilly in the Counties Cup G2.
Creil has now won four of her 18 starts and more than $150,000 in prizemoney.
