The success of New Zealand first crop sires has so far been a
highlight of the domestic 2005-06 season. It continued yesterday at Matamata where they produced the quinella in both of the day's feature races, the $100,000 Matamata Breeders' S. 1200m G2 for fillies, and the $35,000 Matamata Slipper 1200m LR for colts and geldings.
The Breeders' Stakes was won by Naturo (Postponed), from Chant (Traditionally), who is already a Group 3 winner. Trudy Tee, by second leading second-crop sire Chief Bearhart, was third. Naturo, who had previously won her debut at Trentham in December was bred byCarole McLachlan and her son, NZTBA member Andrew. Offered at the 2005 NZ Select Sale on their behalf by Seaton Park, the filly was passed in for $9,000. She is raced by Andrew and his wife Dionne, Andrew's brother Malcolm and nephew Scott, with close friends Barry Prosser and Barry Wright.
Naturo is a daughter of the Rubiton mare Rubiton's Best, winner of five races in New South Wales, including two in Sydney. Her dam Mirtoan Sea is a sister to two very good South Island stakes-winning fillies of the late 1970s, Ionian Sea and Aegean Sea, both by the good sire and excellent broodmare sire Beaufort Sea. Ionian Sea became second dam of G3 Power of Destiny, and third dam of SW Tonic, while Aegean Sea left G3 Syrian Sea and the dam of the high-class G1 mare Electronic. The late Ted McLachlan bred a number of horses from this family in the 1980s and 1990s, so it is fitting his wife, sons and grandson have bred, and are racing its latest stakeswinner.
Naturo is one of two winners from only three New Zealand starters to date by Postponed, who began his stud career at Fayette Park and now stands at Stoney Bridge Farm, Karaka. He moves from fifth to second on the first-crop sires' table, behind the other sire who featured at Matamata yesterday, Black Minnaloushe, and ahead of Traditionally and Bertolini. With less than $20,000 prizemoney separating the four of them, their progeny will be especially interesting to follow through the nine remaining Group & Listed two-year-old races scheduled between now and the end of the season.
Black Minnaloushe cocked a snook at the marketplace when his sons Jokers Wild and first-starter Cadre Noir quinella-ed the Matamata Slipper 1200m LR. Buyers paid a modest average of $70,000 for 11 yearlings by Black Minnaloushe at the recent New Zealand Premier Sale. As it happens, that's close to the average of the prices paid last year for Jokers Wild, a $40,000 purchase at the Select Sale, and Cadre Noir, bought for $115,000 from the Premier Sale.
Jokers Wild, previously a winner of the Avondale JC Counties Challenge S. LR in November, was bred by Te Mania Thoroughbreds' Jo Wilding in partnership with Messrs B.T. Hoong and C.W. Wong. From the Rory's Jester mare Miss Rory, Jokers Wild is the latest stakeswinner from a family notable for the outstanding success of its unraced and moderately performed daughters as broodmares in Australasia.
His third dam Royal News was a winning full sister to champion New Zealand sire Sovereign Edition. She was imported to Australia in the mid-1980s and left two foals to Rancher, including a filly named Royal Gossip second dam of Jokers Wild.
Five of Royal News' UK-bred daughters (Life at Last, Engagement, Betty Box, Royal Comment and Barron Fey) followed her south and each has founded her own thriving branch of the family. Major winners include Ivory's Irish (AJC Australian Derby G1), G1 winners Brawny Spirit, Penny Gem, Alynda and Global News; G2 winners Full At Last, Catnipped and Big Barron; and the stakeswinners Chuckle, Bleveeka, Miss Prospect, Life's A Bounty, One Man Out, Bigamy, Capestad, Altrista and Zalinda.
Two-year-olds by four stallions from the "Class of 2002" have filled 13 of the 33 winner/placegetter spots in the eleven black type juvenile races held in New Zealand so far this season. Those four stallions are:
Bertolini (Danzig), standing at Rich Hill Stud, Matamata; sire of G3 & SP Solvini, SW Xbert & SP Kincaple Dancer
Black Minnaloushe, (Storm Cat) standing at Windsor Park Stud, Cambridge; sire of dual SW & SP Jokers Wild, SP Shortblackmini & SP Cadre Noir
Postponed (Summer Squall), standing at Stoney Bridge Farm, Karaka; sire of G2 Naturo
Traditionally (Mr Prospector), standing at The Oaks, Cambridge; sire of G3, SW & GP Chant
