Two-year-old filly Mary Lavelle was most impressive winning the CJC Champagne S. LR at Riccarton Park last Saturday in the style of a filly that could well make up into a lovely Oaks prospect next season.
She also collected a TBS bonus of $10,950 for her Southland owner Keith Neylon. Keith, a member of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing board, purchased Mary Lavelle for $95,000 from her Hawke's Bay breeders Kevin & Julie Taylor at the 2005 New Zealand Select Sale.
Runner-up in the race was another TBS-qualified runner Uditagain, who added $2700 to her earnings.
Mary Lavelle's win was part of an extraordinary day for the Taylors whose homebred mare Viennetta won, then lost the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' S. G1 at Te Aroha when she was relegated to third place for interference suffered by the third horse past the post, Salsa.
Promising three-year-old gelding Tachus added a $5475 TBS bonus to his earnings when he scored a comfortable win at Te Aroha on the same day. That took his record to three wins from seven starts for his Auckland owners Doug & Adrienne Alderslade, and Moira & Michael Murdoch, the partnership that raced the outstanding performer Solvit. Doug is also well-known as a director of the Auckland Racing Club. Bred by Lars Pearson, Tachus was a $13,000 purchase from the 2004 New Zealand Festival Sale.
