Hawke's Bay is a very easy part of New Zealand in which to spend a relaxing, interesting weekend, especially if you're keen on thoroughbred racing & breeding. And great wine!
For local and visiting NZTBA members and other owners and breeders, the first weekend in July is worth setting aside for a winter sojourn in "the Bay." Catch the Hawke's Bay Hurdles and Steeplechase on Saturday 1 July, and head out at a leisurely time on Sunday for the annual weanling walk organised by the Hawke's Bay/Poverty Bay branch of the NZTBA.
It begins at Montana Lodge, Ngatarawa Road, Hastings at 10.30am, then on to Gouldbrook Stud which will include some weanlings from Byerley Stud, then on to Keltern Stud and finish at Netherby.
Behind those stud names lies some of New Zealand's most glorious thoroughbred breeding history. Montana Lodge is part-owned by Isabell Roddick, breeder of champion Rough Habit. Gouldbrook Stud is the property of Judy Glazebrook, whose father bred and owned the champion mareLeilani; Byerley is owned by Arthur Ormond, one of the NZTBA's most notable past presidents, and descendant of the famous owner and breeder, J.D. Ormond. Keltern Stud is the property of leading sponsor and substantial owner Sam Kelt and Netherby is owned by Graham de Gruchy, owner-breeder of another champion, Horlicks.
Foals on parade will include the progeny of Ekraar, Elusive City, King of Kings, Chianti, Colombia, Thorn Park, Jungle Pocket, Al Akbar, Keeper, Pins, Montjeu and Stravinsky.
Walking, of course, creates thirst and hunger. So, naturally, there'll be a lunch afterwards, at Sileni Winery. A l--o--n--g lunch!
The cost is $35 per person and reservations are essential. These can be made by contacting Isabell Roddick:
Ph: (06) 879 8662
Email: montanalodge@actrix.co.nz
The branch needs to confirm numbers for the restaurant, so the deadline for lunch bookings is Wednesday 28 June.
See you in the Bay!
