NZTBA Scholarship winner Tracy Mourits has been awarded the Gold Medal for the 2006 Irish National Stud Diploma course at a graduation ceremony held at the Stud on Saturday.
Tracy reported the news in an email to Sally Cassels-Brown, who manages the Association's Scholarship Programme. Sally says, "We are absolutely delighted with Tracy's success and she adds to the outstanding record of our Scholarship winners in Ireland."
Tracy, who previously worked at Mapperley Stud and participated in the Waikato Equine Training Scheme, is the fifth NZTBA Scholar to top her course intake, following Nicola Walling (1993), Fiona Bassett (1994), Lisa Partell (1997) and Anna Miles (2001).
Two NZTBA Overseas Training Scholarships, to the English & Irish National Studs, were established in 1991 by the NZTBA Wellington branch which funded both of them until 2005. This year the branch sponsored the Irish Scholarship, worth approximately $7500, and re-named it the Ted Howarth Memorial Scholarship, in honour of the distinguished former branch and Council president who died last December.
Trelawney Stud has taken up the sponsorship of the English National Stud Scholarship, now known as the Keith Taylor Equine Scholarship. It was won this year by Amy Thomson whose course graduation is later this week.
Sally Carroll, responsible for student liaison at the Irish National Stud, reports that Tracy achieved a total mark of almost 85% for the course. Ms Carroll adds, "She is a great ambassador for the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association."
Tracy is soon travelling to England where she will undertake yearling preparation at New England Stud, Newmarket before returning to New Zealand for the summer sales season.
