Five-year-old Mikki Street gave his owner John Street, and breeders Alastair and Carolyn Ring their biggest successes in 30 years when he won the $200,000 ARC Galaxy S. 2000m G1 at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.
Mikki Street (Cape Cross-Ocean Pearl by Crested Wave) was purchased as a yearling at the 2003 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale for $61,000 from the draft of Haunui Farm which sold him on behalf of the Rings, who are both members of the NZTBA. Alastair is also a past president of the Counties Racing Club.
The Rings have only two broodmares at present including Mikki Street's dam, Ocean Pearl and her daughter Dollars N Diamonds (by British Banker).
Ocean Pearl has left four individual winners and is a half-sister to the dam of champion Super Impose (Imposing). The family traces back to the colonial taproot mare Winnie (b. 1878), also the ancestress of Stylish Dude (1984 ARC Auckland Cup G1). The best recent performers from this family have been the brilliant sprinter Egyptian Raine (2003 ARC Railway S. G1 and multiple G1 placings in Australia), G2 Irish Rover and G2 Maythehorsebewithu. "We bought Ocean Pearl as a yearling and she's now 18 years old and in foal to Don Eduardo," said Alastair Ring. Ocean Pearl has a Don Eduardo colt foal at foot and the Rings have retained her two-year-old gelding by Traditionally to race themselves. Mikki Street's sire Cape Cross has produced 28 SW, eight of them from the 311 foals he sired at Cambridge Stud during the four seasons he shuttled there, 2000-2003. These include three Group One winners, Mikki Street, Seachange (both this season) and Kindacross, as well as current season G2 Gaze. Mikki Street is the second stakeswinner by Cape Cross from a Crested Wave mare: the other is Cape North, winner of last season's Western Australian Guineas G2.
Cape Cross is now third behind Pins and Volksraad on the New Zealand general sires' premiership with more than $898,000 in stakes. Crested Wave, also the sire of recent dual Group 2-winning three-year-old Veloce Bella, is lying fifth on the broodmare sires' list.
Mikki Street, who won the CJC Winter Cup G3 in August, has now won six races and $268,967 for his owner and trainer Lisa Latta.
