I have completed my second placement at Cheveley Park and I'm currently in my second week at Taylormade Farm, Kentucky.
Cheveley Park is situated in Newmarket, England and is the largest british owned Stud Farm. I arrived at Cheveley Park in the middle of May just as the breeding season was beginning to slow down which allowed me to spend more time with the stud manager. I was able to shadow the manager during daily vet work, foal conformation evaluations and general everyday duties. This gave a fanatastic insight into the running of a large stud farm. In addition, I worked in the stallion barn with stallions such as Pivotal, Medicean and Kyllacyhy which was an amazing experience.
During my stay at Cheveley Park the flat racing season kicked off and I was able to go Royal Ascot the day Miss Andretti won the King Stand Stakes. Through Cheveley I got tickets to the Darley Corporate box which was mind blowing and I was introduced to people such as Ollie Tait and John Ferguson. The contacts made during are invaluable and will leave me in good stead for the future. Newmarket Racecourse host friday night racing and was able to see INXS in concert after the races. This is a great concept. I also went to the July Cup which is England's premier sprint race.
I spent time with an ex New Zealand Bloodstock Agent Larry Stratton at Tattersalls July Breeding Sale. Larry Stratton now specialises in the purchase of breeding stock for New Zealand and Australia in Europe for Southern Hemisphere clients. I learned a huge amount about the evaluations of potential breeding stock for NZ and Aus. Larry has a great 'eye' and also taught me alot about pricing breeding stock.
Overall, the second leg gave me a terrific insight into Britain and allowed me to experience a broad spectrum of the industry.
I would like to thank everyone that is involved with this scholarship. Managers from Coolmore, Cheveley and Taylormade all agree that this is one of the best Scholarships in the world. I strongly encourage people to apply for the 2008 scholarship as this has fast forwarded my career within the industry.
Taylormade is going well, I'm in Saratoga at the moment. Being able to be a show person already, which apparently is a big deal for Taylormade. We have it so easy in NZ and Aus, the sales here are hectic.
