Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) on Monday received advice from the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) that initial samples taken from horses trained at Doomben and stabled at Hendra have returned positive to equine influenza (EI).
Confirmative tests are underway and confirmation or otherwise is expected today.
QRL Chief Operations Manager, Malcolm Tuttle said, "If indeed our worst fears are realised this will be a considerable setback for thoroughbred racing in Queensland. As a precaution, QRL and the DPI&F have locked down the Metropolitan precinct and there will be no further training or racing activity at Eagle Farm or Doomben until further notice."
Tuttle confirmed that 7000 files of vaccine will be made available to QRL this Friday and that vaccination of the horse precincts clear of any clinical signs of EI will be a priority.
Additionally, floating by way of permit to approved precincts in the red zone has been put on hold until further notice.
The DPI&F this morning confirmed that the number of infected premises within SEQ had increased to 282.
