The Chairman of Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) on Tuesday took the drastic step of suspending racing in the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) red zone of South East Queensland following the confirmed equine influenza (EI) outbreak in the Eagle Farm and Doomben precinct and six unconfirmed cases in the Deagon precinct.
Subject to no further EI outbreaks in the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba precincts and that vaccination takes place in accordance with regulations, racing will re-commence as soon as practicable.
However, racing in the metropolitan Brisbane area will not resume until the first of February as horses will require sufficient time to recover from the EI outbreak in that area.
Racing will continue in the DPI&F green zone and Queensland Racing will work towards optimising TAB race meetings in that area.
Training will be further restricted to the leading of horses. Further detail will be provided to stakeholders.
QRL will work with the DPI&F to enable some tightly restricted walking of horses.
As a result of this, Queensland Racing will continue to plan a strategy to enable priority distribution of the equine influenza vaccine on Saturday to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba precincts within the DPI&F red zone.
