Listed Ipswich Cup winner Our Lukas (Generous-Parfore) became the tenth individual stakes winner this season to be born and bred at Westbury Stud in Karaka.
"It's been a bumper season for us. We have been represented by 10 individual stakes winners who have won races right across the board. We have had a stayer and a sprinter, a two-year-old and a three-year-old, a miler and a middle distance horse, and they have won here, in Australia and in Hong Kong. You couldn't wish for a better result," enthused Westbury Stud CEO Russell Warwick.
Our Lukas adds black type to a family that Westbury has been developing since Gold Brose came to stud in New Zealand some 14 years ago and more recently this family has produced the Champion Two Year Old and Group One winning filly Il Quello Veloce.
"It's a family that we have developed over the years after buying Classy Twiggy specifically to go to Gold Brose, and now it's starting to produce results with two of the three daughters now producing stakes winners," according to Warwick.
The partnership that owned Gold Brose, Ferncourt Pty Limited, bought Classy Twiggy (Twig Moss – Enchantress), a winner of five races including the listed VRC Vanity Stakes, specifically to send to that stallion. Classy Twiggy was in foal to Palace Music at the time and produced Marloo. She then went to Gold Brose for the next four years and produced Sparky, a winner of five in Hong Kong, Parfore, Golden Sparkle and Nishaani, the dam of Il Quello Veloce. She died in 2001 while in foal to Generous.
Classy Twiggy was a half sister to seven winners including the stakes placed Metal Trader (Palace Music), being out of Enchantress (Sir Tristram-Pasionella), herself a sister to the stakes winner Jambeau.
Nishaani and Parfore were kept within the Westbury fold and Parfore raced with moderate success in Melbourne for her breeders Fencourt Pty Limited. She went to Generous and in 2002 produced a filly and was sent back to that sire. In 2003, while in foal, Ferncourt Pty Limited sold her through the Westbury dispersal to the Adelaide-based Final Triumph (NZ) Limited partnership, the breeders of Our Lukas. They then sent her to Faltaat, and while in foal was on sold again and this time Paul Willetts bought her for Mike Ryan for $30,000.
"Mike is also based in Australia," Russell added, "and for him Parfore has produced Our Boy Lukas (Faltaat) who has been placed in Queensland. Her next foal is Frustrating (Stravinsky), a three-year-old who has raced twice in New South Wales and a colt by Dubawi. She has a Darci Bharma weanling colt and is carrying a three-quarter relation to Il Quello Veloce.
"Her first foal Ininthree has won two races and run nine seconds from the Donoghue/Pike stable, and Our Lukas has now won eight races and been placed eight times and now with a bit of maturity, looks like a potential stayer with a future."
Our Lukas resumed racing on Anzac day this year with a win over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm. He followed that up with a fourth placing a fortnight later at Doomben and two weeks after that scored an easy win over 1615 metres at that track.
He returned to Eagle Farm for the listed XXXX Gold Phil Sullivan Handicap over 1600 metres on "Super Saturday" and ran an unlucky third. Seven days later he backed up and won at Ipswich over 2150 metres.
"This is a family we had faith in and now it's coming to fruition. All we need now is for Golden Sparkle to produce a stakes winner and we will have the treble!" he concluded.
For the record Golden Sparkle has produced two placed runners to date and, like Parfore, is carrying a three quarter relation to Il Quello Veloce.
