It may have only been a $5000 maiden race at Cambridge J.C.'s Te Rapa meeting last Sunday, but it was also a much bigger milestone when Tantrum won the Wentwood Grange 1200 and became the 100th winner directly descended from the great Soliloquy.
Ridden by regular stable jockey Patrick Holmes at only her second raceday start, the 4yo Savabeel mare travelled midfield along the rail before being taken wide around the turn and running home strongly to win by 3/4 length with a bit in hand. Tantrum is the 3rd foal out of multiple winning and stakes placed mare Tantamount (Last Tycoon), and a great-granddaughter of Soliloquy.
Her win brought the number of individual winners descended from the Soliloquy Lodge foundation broodmare to a century.
Soliloquy, a 1971 mare by Sobig out of Princess Patine, recorded 13 wins including the Gr.1 Lion Brown Sprint where she beat home the champion Balmerino. At stud, the first generation saw her leave 9 winners including Gr.1 Avondale Cup winner and filly of the year Solveig.
Since then, every subsequent generation has produced more black type winners - the likes of Culminate, Gallic, Cross Swords, Captivate, Eileen Dubh, Temple Hills, Solvini, Mr Ubiquitous, Greig, Lady of the Desert, Agamemnon and Soltanto all claim Soliloquy as their matriarch.
Meanwhile owner and breeder Richard Moore will be hoping that Tantrum, the most recent winner from his famous family, can join those illustrious ranks as her racing career progresses.
