The weather gods were shining on the Waikato Branch when they held their annual JLT Bloodstock Stallion Parade last weekend.
"The weather was fantastic on both days and that really helped to get the people out and looking," according to Waikato Branch president Mark Devcich.
"We had good numbers on both Saturday and Sunday, naturally Saturday was a bit quieter due to the races and other sporting commitments but on Sunday we had a big turn out.
"The new season's stallions were exceptionally popular and I would say that at the peak on Sunday afternoon there would have been around 250 people viewing the likes of Rip Van Winkle (IRE) at Windsor Park."
On Saturday the parade which is a self drive affair, was held in the afternoon only and featured the Matamata based stallions. Waikato Branch Committeeman Keith Lunn was in fine form as the compere when the parade commenced at Ancroft Stud where the first season stallion Tiger Prawn(SAF) and El Hermano were both on view. Waikato Stud paraded their new sire Paco Boy (IRE) along with their leading sires O'Reilly and Pins (AUS). Also on the roster were Savabeel, Fast'n Famous(AUS) , Rios and No Excuse Needed(GB).
First season stallion Shocking(AUS) was the headline act at Rich Hill Stud, where Any Suggestions (AUS), Sir Percy(GB) and Pentire (GB) were also paraded, but it was Pentire who was being toasted when Mufhasa won the Makfi Classic at Hastings, his sixth group one race later in the afternoon.
It was an early start on Sunday when the tour kicked off at Highview Stud the home of Align(AUS), Danroad (AUS) and Sufficient. Next stop was Dormello to view Duelled (AUS) followed by first time participants Bluegables Farm who stand first season sire Shamoline Warrior (AUS).
Over to Paxton Park the home of Shinko King(IRE) and their new stallions Gorky Park and Prince Conti and then the star line up at Windsor Park, where there new boy on the block Rip Van Winkle really stole the show. Breeders also viewed the champion stallion Thorn Park (AUS), along with Thewayyouare (USA), Mastercraftsman (IRE), Falkirk and Guillotine.
Lunch was served at The Oaks after their stallion line up of Darci Brahma, Sahkee's Secret (GB), Roc de Cambes and Bachelor Duke (USA) was viewed, and after lunch Battle Paint (AUS) was paraded at Chequers Stud.
Cambridge Stud paraded Lucky Unicorn, Tavistock, Stravinsky, Keeper and Zabeel before the final stop at Brighthill Farm where Eagle Mountain (GB), Patapan (USA) and Perfectly Ready (AUS) were on view.
"Talking to broodmare owners on the tour they all seem to be waiting until the last minute before they make their bookings especially those with the less commercial mares. However according to the studmasters bookings for the top end stallions seem to be quite steady. It's a great weekend to catch up with fellow breeders and share some thoughts on the state of the industry.
"One of the highlights of the weekend is our Breeder of the Month dinner which is held on the Saturday night at the lovely Longlands Restaurant in Matamata. It was a great night with about 80 guests. It was the third time we have hosted this dinner which honours the smaller breeders for their achievements during the year.
"We present twelve awards one for each month and it's just a simple way to recognize the commitment and dedication of breeders and owners and of the wonderful performances of their horses."
