The triple group one Auckland Cup winner Shez Sinsational(Ekraar[USA]-Original Sin) is everything pedigree aficionado Peter Jenkins hoped she would be.
Jenkins who is currently on the staff at Arrowfield in Sydney was working in New Zealand for Stoneybridge at the time and when they imported the Red Ransom (USA) stallion Ekraar he set about deciding which mares would best suit him. Original Sin was amongst the racing team of the Karaka Group a part of Stoneybridge at that time and was selected for a mating with the new stallion. On the track she had won a couple and been placed in the listed Soliloquy Stakes, she was also a half brother to Shinnecock (Woodborough [USA]) who won the listed Wellesley Stakes before racing successfully in Hong Kong as Green Vacation. Her dam Hope Chest is a full sister to arguably Balios's best son Brutus whose 13 wins included a group one Marlboro Mile at Trentham. According to Jenkins at the time they secured Ekraar he had identified two key areas of his pedigree were going to be important to his success. "Ekraar had significant build-ups of Selene and Plucky Liege especially through the dam of his sire (in the case of the Selene) and through his granddam (in the case of the Plucky Liege). "These were good clues. I hypothesised that more Selene, particularly through the opposite sex lines he lacked, such as male strains of Hyperion and female strains of Pharamond, were likely to be effective. Along the same lines female strains of Bull Dog or male strains of his son Bull Lea should also prove highly compatible. "Original Sin featured six lines of Hyperion including sons Aristophanes and Alibhai. The Ballymoss duplication was fascinating as not only was it sex-balanced but of course Ballymoss's sire Mossborough is out of All Moonshine, a daughter of Selene and Hyperion's ¾ sister. The female angle no doubt favoured a filly foal, Shez Sinsational's full brother was nowhere near as talented. "With regard to the Plucky Liege angle, Original Sin featured a "new" son of Plucky Liege in Bois Roussel as the damsire of Balios, while a less common son of Bull Lea – Hill Gail – crops up as the sire of High Rank, third dam sire of Original Sin. The female Nearctic strain is always an asset to Red Ransom and his sons with mares with multiple lines of Northern Dancer," he explained. Shez Sinsational's brother Eye Might may not be quite as talented but he has won 10 races in Australia, and a five-year-old sister Relenting has won one race. After Original Sin had produced a colt by Mr Nancho (ARG) who has yet to race, the mare was sold in 2009 for $16,000 to Gold Coast solicitor Steve Davoren, who has a portfolio of bloodstock in New Zealand under the banner of Assured Assets Pty Limited. Davoren is a shareholder in Ekraar and returned the mare to that stallion in 2010 where she produced another filly, which sold to Hong Kong interests at the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale this summer for $110,000. Unfortunately that was to be her last foal as she died late last year. However among Davoren's broodmare's in New Zealand is a mare called Ghemashah (AUS) (Danewin-Amalee) who is the dam of the group one placed group three winner Twilight Savings, and she has a cracking Ekraar filly at foot and returned to him this season.
