The NZTBA (Waikato Branch) have been delivering an equine breeding education course for a number of years.
This year we are pleased to advise that we now have 3 courses on offer which will suit a broader range of employees, and with the inclusion of a distance learning model these courses are now assessable to people and studs outside of the Waikato region.
We would like to take this opportunity to update you on the courses that we have to offer the industry this year, and would really appreciate if you are able to discuss training opportunities with your staff and also place this information in the staff room.
All the courses contain both practical and theoretical components and have been designed specifically for people who work in the breeding industry. These courses are designed to disseminate information as well as offering people working in our industry the opportunity to gain recognition for their skills and achieve national qualifications.
We also believe that to market our industry successfully as a viable career to teachers, parents and students our industry needs to have strong education and career pathways so we can compete on a level playing field with other industries and entice good quality young people into our industry.
Content for the courses include;
• Evolution of the thoroughbred
• Musculoskeletal anatomy
• Organ systems
• Practical aspects of genetics
• Dentistry
• Reproduction
• Foal and yearling care
• Farriery hoof trimming
• Facility development
• Nutrition and pasture management.
• Machinery use and maintenance
• Industry structure and organisation
Both on job and off job components make up the course, so students are getting recognition for the skills they use daily
Students must be employed in the industry to attend so it is more like an apprenticeship rather than a polytechnic course which is not hands on.
The courses we are offering this year include:
National Certificate in Equine (Breeding)(Level 3) – Year 1
A stand alone qualification of 75 credits, which equates to achieving half of the level 4 course.
It can be achieved by correspondence or attending classes delivered in Cambridge on Wednesday nights from 4-6pm April through to early August, students are able to interact with specialist industry speakers who share their knowledge and insights and participate in hands on field day activities and block courses to complete prior to the busy season
National Certificate in Equine (Breeding)(Level 4) – Year 2
Builds on the theory and practical skills of level 3 (75 credits) plus a further 85 credits.
It can be achieved by correspondence or attending classes delivered in Cambridge on Wednesday nights from 4-6pm April through to early August, students are able to interact with specialist industry speakers who share their knowledge and insights and participate in hands on field day activities and block courses to complete prior to the busy season
It is expected that the level 4 course will be achieved following completion of two off-season courses (level 3 & level 4) plus the time it takes to achieve the practical experience, however recognition for prior learning can reduce the level 3 & 4 to one year.
National Certificate in Equine (Breeding)(Level 5) Management/Diploma Level
This new course is being offered via correspondence and targets people who have been in the industry for some time, and who have a sound knowledge of breeding practices. The content includes advanced horse husbandry and breeding skills as well as business and management papers.
The level 5 course is a suitable pre-curser for further Massey study or an alternative as it is a lot more cost effective as well as fitting into a stud staffs busy schedule more readily as there is a more practical emphasis with a lot of the evidence collected in the workplace.
It is anticipated business seminars supporting this qualification will be run in various regions throughout New Zealand in collaboration with NZTR.
Content for the course includes;
• Workplace communications
• Managing teams & supervising workplace operations
• Conducting staff selection interviews
• Employment requirements & termination procedures
• Preparing and implementing health and safety plans
• Financial documentation, taxation and insurance responsibilities
• Media interview skills
• Musculoskeletal anatomy
• Information & communication technology
• Evolution of the thoroughbred
• Horse husbandry
• Reproduction
We also welcome any self employed small or large business owners to attend and local students are welcome to visit class to use computer resources and catch up with the tutor
Options for past students who did not quite finish the breeding qualification
We are aware that there have been a number of students over the years who 'almost' completed their qualification, and only require a handful of unit standards left to complete. I would be really happy to help these people 'finish' off their qualifications via correspondence and by recognising their current skills and competence. Please ask them to contact me and we'll get things sorted.
Correspondence will be undertaken utilising the great new colourful resource materials which are continuing to be developed for all standards in equine qualifications, they consist of workbooks, assessments and on-job sign off forms and should provide excellent reference materials for the future. Enclosed is a sample of workbook layout and content.
It is also worthwhile noting that employees enrolled in any of the courses receive complimentary membership to the NZTBA and Waikato Branch or NZTBA, the benefits include a free copy of the annual Stallion Register and a range of other relevant industry literature, as well as full access to the Waikato Thoroughbred Breeders equine library.
The NZTBA Equine Training Scheme is well subsidised by both Tertiary Education Commission and the NZTBA, so costs to students are minimal.
