"One of our best-ever events," is how Chief Executive Michael Martin described the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association's celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Tuesday 26 June.
New Zealand's Governor-General, Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, and Lady Janine Mateparae hosted the dinner at Government House in Auckland.
Michael acknowledged the contributions of Government House staff, the NZTBA's Office Manager Sally Cassels-Brown and MC Steve Davis to the evening's seamless presentation.
Seventy invited guests, including New Zealand's Minister for Racing, the Honourable Nathan Guy, and Sir Patrick & Lady Hogan, paid tribute to Her Majesty's 60 years of service, and her love of racing and breeding thoroughbred horses.
The NZTBA is the only horse-related organisation patronised by the Queen outside the United Kingdom. She is the patron of only one other breeders' association, the British TBA.
The evening concluded with the auction of four stallion nominations to raise funds for the Sunline Trust, established in 2002 by the NZTBA Auckland branch upon the retirement of the champion racemare. The initial funds have supported nine recipients of the annually awarded International Management Scholarship (IMS).
Each IMS winner works at Cheveley Park, England and then Coolmore Ireland during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season, followed by yearling preparation for the Saratoga and Keeneland Sales at Taylor Made in the United States.
Past recipients of the scholarship include Shannon Taylor, Haunui Farm's Marketing and Operations Manager, Michael Wallace, now a successful Bloodstock Agent and Bruce Slade, Racing Manager for Gai Waterhouse. Bruce and Shannon both attended the Diamond Jubilee Dinner and spoke about their scholarship experiences and their current work.
Michael Martin, also a trustee of the Sunline Trust, said, "We are all immensely proud of these young people now making their own marks in the thoroughbred industry, and we're very grateful to the New Zealand and international studs and breeders whose generosity funds each scholarship award."
