Founding director Chris Luoni has succeeded Gerald Fell as chairman of the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame.
Fell has remained as a director and has been joined by newcomers Cherry Taylor, of Trelawney Stud, and Haunui Farm's Mark Chitty. "Gerald was an inspirational chairman during our first nine years of operation and we thank him for his leadership and commitment," Luoni said. "Both Cherry and Mark have leadership positions in our industry and are looking forward to their involvement in this worthy organisation." The Racing Hall of Fame board has also announced the establishment of up an educational scholarship in honour of its late director Phillip Leishman. "We are currently discussing options for the scholarship and working through how to best access up and coming journalists that are likely to have an opportunity to gain real exposure in the media for racing," Luoni said. In other news, a new display honouring inductees Sir Patrick Hogan and his champion stallion Sir Tristram is on view at Hamilton Airport, while the kiosk at Te Papa has been well-received by the museum's visitors, 1.25 million annually. Showing inductee film clips as part of the Phar Lap exhibition, it is the only permanent sports display on show and has provided an excellent promotional site for thoroughbred racing. Meanwhile, the Racing Hall of Fame's fifth induction dinner will be held in Hamilton on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Sky City where a selection of elite horses and racing personalities will be inducted. The function will precede the Waikato Racing Club's International race meeting and will be the first occasion the event has been held outside of Auckland.
