The Vince & Joyce Roberts bred 3yo D'Cash Man looks in fine fettle for upcoming feature races, including the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Group one) in which he holds a nomination for, after Saturday's highly impressive victory at Riccarton Park.
D'Cash Man was dropping back in class from his last start fourth in the 1200m listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes at Ruakaka, where he led and was only caught late by some classy horses including the unbeaten Hawke's Bay Guineas winner, Sacred Falls.
D'Cash Man was stepping up to 1400m for the first time on Saturday, but any queries about whether or not he would handle the step up in distance were soon put to rest.
The Kenny and Lisa Rae trained 3yo chestnut gelding set a torrid clip in front and proved too strong for his opposition in an effortless six length victory in the hands of jockey, Paul Taylor who just niggled away at him, keeping his mind on the job down the home stretch.
D'Cash Man is out of an unraced D'Cash mare called Aimee's Cash.
"She had ability and won her first trial comprehensively, but then unfortunately bowed a tendon" said co owner and breeder Vince Roberts."
Aimee's Cash is out of Aimee's Star (Lord Century) and is a half sister to Aimee's Idol (Colombia) who won six races including one at listed level and was trained by Vince himself.
"I bought Tonic Star (Noalcoholic) 20 odd years ago at a sale for $1500, with Aimee's Star at foot and back in-foal to Aimee's Star's sire Lord Century, and have been involved with the breed ever since."
D'Cash Man is a son of the Argentine stallion Mr Nancho (ARG), who interestingly used to race with a very similar style to his 3yo son, often adopting the "catch me if you can" tactics that D'Cash has used in five of his six starts to date, with three of them resulting in victory.
Mr Nacho's (ARG) best ever career performance came in the Group One Gran Premio de Palmero where he left his rivals breathless and won by an unbelievable ever-widening margin of 16 lengths over the 1600m.
A performance that D'Cash Man will be looking to replicate if he wants to give Sacred Falls a run for his money is the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Group one) on 10th November, which is a race that is run over the same distance as the Group One Gran Premio de Palmero that his sire won so impressively.
The New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Group One) will be another step up of 200m in distance for D'Cash Man but judging by the way he found the line at Riccarton, it shouldn't be a problem. After all, not only was Mr Nancho (ARG) a Group One winner over the 1600m, but so was his full sister Miss Linda. (Southern Halo) (USA).
"I think he will go a mile, there's no reason he shouldn't, his sire won a Group One over 1600m, his sire's full sister won a Group One over 1600m, and there have been plenty of 1600m winners on the dam's side" Vince added.
Southern Halo (USA) has been an extremely influential stallion, being leading sire in Argentina on ten occasions, and has sired an incredible 170 stakes winners.
Others sons of Southern Halo (USA) currently standing at stud, apart from Mr Nancho (ARG), Edenwold (CAN), and the recently deceased My Halo (ARG), include the extremely successful sire More Than Ready, who is the sire of current champion mare More Joyous.
More Than Ready, just like Mr Nancho, carries three crosses of top racehorse and influential Irish stallion Nasrullah (IRE) on his dam's side.
"I just kept on telling myself I was breeding her to More Than Ready" joked Vince when referring to his decision to mate Aimee's Cash with Mr Nancho.
"He was a lovely athletic and muscular foal right from day one, and is a nice horse to do anything with until you get on his back. He can get a bit fired up and over race. I think he would have gone close to winning the Westbury Challenge Stakes if he had just relaxed. Kenny and Lisa Rae are doing a great job with him, and he was much better at Riccarton on Saturday and relaxed in front. He will head to the Ray Coupland Stakes (LR) at Ashburton over 1400m on 19th October and then a decision will be made on a start in the Guineas."
