New Zealand Cup Week 2012 Wrap-up

Final Touch was in great touch for the Parsons' over Cup Week
It's not often someone can claim to have bred, owned and co-trained a listed winner, but that's exactly what South Island horsewoman Karen Parsons did over New Zealand Cup week.

The 5yo brown daughter of Kashani (USA) was a close up second in the Pegasus Stakes (Listed) over the 1000m trip on the first-day of the New Zealand Cup carnival and went one better on the Wednesday, when taking out the Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders Stakes (Listed).

The listed win was the 13th in Final Touch's 34 start career, boosting her stake earnings up to $239,000. Final Touch is out of My Lydia (AUS) a mare by Umatilla (NZ) who had, had very little success before Final Touch appeared on the race track in 2010. My Lydia's (AUS) first two foals died, before Karen finally had a healthy foal in Nareda, a daughter of Al Jadeed (USA) who was victorious in one of 19 career appearances. "She won her last ever race, and could have won more but unfortunately broke down," said Karen Parsons.
Final Touch is My Lydia's (Aus) second live foal, as well as her last as she has now ceased breeding.

"We had a lot of bad luck with My Lydia, and lost numerous foals out of her, including a full brother to Final Touch."
"I'm a bit of a pedigree buff and drive my husband (John Parsons) mad with all my research into crosses that look good on paper."
"Anyway the My Lydia-Kashani cross was one of those crosses that looked perfect on paper, and we had already had success with Lookatmenow, a son of Kashani out of My Lydia's dam Shavary Lady, so that gave me a bit of confidence in the cross." She added.

"After we retired Nareda, we tried to breed her to Kashani (USA) as well but that was the year he was sub-fertile, so it's fair to say we haven't had a lot of luck with the family apart from Final Touch."

"Nareda now has a lovely Shinko King (IRE) foal so things are looking like they are on the up now." Said Parsons.
After her successful cup week, Final Touch was a fast finishing fourth in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Group Two) and now all going well will line up in the Westbury Stud Captain Cook Stakes (Group One) on Saturday the 8th of December at Trentham.
"She's just a lovely mare, both on and off the race track. A lot of the good mares we have been involved with in the past have been nasty pieces of work, but Final Touch has a lovely nature."

Sacred Falls keeps the unbeaten record intact in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas.
The Mark Chittick (Waikato Stud) bred son of O'Reilly (NZ) kept his unbeaten record intact when winning the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Group one) at Riccarton Park on the first day of the New Zealand Cup carnival. (November 10th).
It was the 3yo Bay colt's sixth win from as many race day appearances, with his previous wins, including the Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes (Listed), DHL Hawke's Bay Guineas (Group Two) and the James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (Group Three).
Sacred Falls was backed into a $1.60 favourite but had to fight like a caged tiger to keep talented filly Oasis Road (AUS) at bay in the final stages.

Sacred Falls was a $160,000 purchase at the 2011 Premier Yearling Sales at Karaka for Raffles Dancers (NZ) Pty Ltd, which is owned by Malaysian Millionaire Dato Yap Kim San of Raffles Farms in Cambridge. The farm and Yap's bloodstock interests in Australasia is managed by Bruce Sherwin.

Sacred Falls is the third foal of winning Redoute's Choice (AUS) mare Iguazu's Girl, who herself is the first foal of a multiple group one winning mare Iguazu. Sacred Falls has already been compared to his illustrious father O'Reilly (NZ) by his breeder.

Blood Brotha goes back-to -back in the New Zealand Cup
Breeder's Brian, Lorraine, Hec & Pat Anderson were back in the spotlight again on Saturday November 17th when Blood Brotha went back-to-back in the Christchurch Casino 149th New Zealand Cup (Group Three).

The seven-year-old son of Danzighill (AUS) (Danehill [USA]-Stater [AUS]) is from a strong staying back ground, with his back-to-back NZ Cup successes making it four wins in the New Zealand Cup (Group Three) for his family, as Blood Brotha's third dam Princess Mellay (NZ) also won the great staying contest twice in the early seventies. Descendants of the family have also won five Great Northern Steeple Chases between them, so it's no surprise that Blood Brotha runs out the 3200m journey so well.
Blood Brotha is trained by Raymond Connors and was ridden by Lisa Allpress in his ever increasing 6 & ½ length victory in the $225,000 event.

Kostalot wins $50,000 NZB Southern Bonus.
In hind sight, Kostalot didn't cost a lot at all, not after he earned his connections $50,000 when taking out the inaugural New Zealand Bloodstock bonus.
Kostalot was a $16,000 sales purchase with it costing just an extra $250 to become eligible for the bonus. Although Kostalot (Any Suggestions x Elemosa) only finished second in the open three-year-old event run over 1400m on Saturday November 17th it was his connections that won the $50,000 bonus as the winner Biddedo (Edenwold) was ineligible due to not being a South Island Sales Graduate.
Of the $50,000 Bonus, $40,000 goes to his owners, the No. 8 Syndicate, $5,000 to his trainer Neil Coulbeck and $5,000 to his breeder Curraghmore Stud.

Alamosa's first stakes performer daughter of NZ Cup winning mare
New Zealand Cup winning mare Everswindell and four time-group one winning stallion Alamosa (NZ) both look like they have produced a nice horse early in their breeding careers in the form of 2yo Welcome Stakes (Listed) runner up Quintette.

Quintette who is Everswindell's first ever foal, was bred and raised at Wellfield Lodge and was having just her second start on Saturday November 17 in the 1000m listed event, and after finishing a close up third was promoted to second, with Choice Snitzel deemed to have cost her finishing in that position.

Quintette was sold by Wellfield Lodge for $190,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Premier Sale to leading buyer David Ellis.
Top staying mare Everswindell was originally bred to Zabeel (NZ) but after missing to him the $374,550 earning Align (AUS) mare underwent a change of plans and was bred to top New Zealand miler Alamosa (NZ) producing Quintette.

The Jason Bridgeman trained filly was an adequate first up fourth over 800m, but as you can imagine the filly that is out of a mare who was best over the 3200m journey was better suited to the 1000ms that Saturday's $50,000 dollar event was run over, with further distance looking beneficial to the filly in the near future.
Quintette is one of the first of the progeny of the 1.2 million-dollar winning son of O'Reilly (NZ), Alamosa (NZ) to hit the track in New Zealand having only sired the one winner to date in, A beautiful Knight, both being part of his oldest crop. (2yo's)
Quintette is now likely to be eased before being prepared for the $1m Karaka Million (1200m) at Ellerslie, 27 January.
The filly that beat Quintette on Saturday November 10 was the Mrs H G & W G Bax & Go Bloodstock New Zealand Ltd bred daughter of Tale Of The Cat (USA) Dancer's Tale, who has now had three race day appearances for two wins and a third.
