Manawatu member harvests gold in Great Northern Hurdles
10 Sep 2013

Manawatu dairy farmer Peter Tennant was quick to come back to earth after the elation of the sensational win by his fine jumper Harvest The Gold (Stark South[USA]- Ballinda) in the ARC Great Northern Hurdles.

"Spring is a busy time on a dairy farm, we are right in the middle of calving, so I was only able to fly up to Auckland for the day, then it was back to work," Tennant said."It was a pretty impressive performance and when you consider it was only his fourth start in two years, Mark [Oulaghan, the trainer] has done a phenomenal job with him, he just set him up for that race."Harvest The Gold went into the Great Northern Hurdles on the back of a good sixth in the Tony Richards Toyota Hurdle at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, where he almost dislodged the rider at the last hurdle when looking likely. Before that run he had won a restricted open hurdle at Manawatu after a race on the flat over 2500 metres, his first racetrack appearance since winning a hurdle event at Ellerslie in October 2011."He injured a tendon and was put aside for 11 months and in February Mark said to me let's bring this horse back in and win the Great Northern Hurdles. You have to hand it to him, he's done a great job. I haven't spoken to him yet, but I think that he will turn him out now and he will be back on the farm for a good spell. Even though he is 11 we will try him again next year if he is sound," Tennant said.Harvest The Gold commenced his racing career with Murray Baker, who had trained his mother Ballinda (Lord Ballina[AUS]- Evening Chime [AUS]) to run a few places for Tennant. She was retired to stud after suffering a heart strain, but her son won four races on the flat and one hurdle event for Baker."I never thought I would race a jumper, but when Harvest The Gold was a youngster he wouldn't run straight so Murray asked me if he could try him over some pony hurdles to make him look straight ahead. The plan worked, and Murray also told me at the time that this horse can really jump."When he lost form for Murray I decided to bring him home and have him trained closer to home at Mark's and now he has won 10 races."Ballinda was the first foal of the Twig Moss (FR) mare Evening Chime, a winning daughter of Star of Milan (Kaoru Star [AUS]), a stakeswinner at two. She is a sister to the stakeswinner Singing Wonder whose stakes-winning daughter Reign of Honour left Hallmark Stud's former sire Spectatorial.Ballinda left one other winner and Harvest The Gold was her last foal.A committee member of the NZTBA Central Districts Branch, Tennant has had a lifelong interest in racing, nurtured by attending meetings in the 1960's with his father who, like many farmers of the time, also dabbled in breeding."My Dad Don bred and raced some good horses over the years, and I had a couple of uncles that owned and trained as well. Dad had a good horse in the 60's called Mixed Reception, he won eight races including a Rangitikei Cup and an Egmont Cup."In the early 80's he bought a Resurgent (IRE) mare called Justaz Wealthy, sent her to Sir Godfrey (FR) and bred a filly called Brierley who won three races before he sent her to Paris Opera (AUS) and she produced a filly called Miss Opera that he leased out before eventually selling. Miss Opera won the listed Castletown Stakes and was placed in a couple of the three-year-old fillies races, and of course she went on to leave Sir Slick, so Dad went close to breeding a really top horse. My wife Barbara has also gone close to breeding a really top horse."Barbara had no interest in horses until we married, but I took her to a sale at Waikato in the late 80's and she took a liking to a mare called Mirramanda (AUS) by Bold Aussie. Shortly after we were in the Wairarapa visiting family and on the way back to the Manawatu I took her to the Ardsley Stud open day where they were parading Lord Ballina for the first time. They gave us a video of his wins and we took it home and thought if we could breed a horse who could finish off his races like Lord Ballina we would be made."She sent Mirramanda there and she produced Mirror Magic and she won two Group One races, the West Australian Derby and the Perth Cup. Mirramanda visited Lord Ballina five times and left two other winners including the stakes placed Digger'n'Dealer and an unraced filly called Ballamanda. As well, she left another stakes winner Bold Mirage by Senor Pete (USA)."Ballamanda's first foal was by Woodborough (USA) and we named him Barborough and raced him ourselves, he won four races and after he ran sixth in the Derby we sold him to Australia. She also left a lovely Danasinga (AUS) filly which we sold at the sales called Danny Holliday, and she in turn has left a champion in Habibi, so once again we went close to breeding a good one."We are happy just pottering around with a few mares and racing the odd one and selling the odd yearling, it's an interest we love and we have had a lot of fun over the years. We have one mare Gold Penny (Pins [AUS]- Waitohi Gold) foaling to Nom de Jeu this season, and she also has a nice two-year-old filly by that sire as well. After Harvest the Gold's win though I might have to open the cheque book and breed again this year," mused Tennant.
