Second Time Lucky (centre) wins the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton

"Absolutely thrilling to watch" is how Lori Jones described Second Time Lucky's (Any Suggestion[AUS]-Dance Parade[AUS]) win in the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccaton over the New Zealand Cup Carnival.
Lori and her husband Gavin are 'strictly for fun hobby breeders', based in Te Kowhai just north of Hamilton and the Any Suggestions two-year-old is their first stakes winner. Second Time Lucky was having only her second race day start. A Pearl Series-nominated filly, she debuted on the first day of the Cup Carnival in the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Two-Year-Old a Pearl Series bonus race and ran second. A week later she lined up again and took out the Welcome Stakes.
"We have only ever leased out horses in the past to the GG Syndicate with winning success but nothing to the level of a black type winner," Lori enthused.
"Right from the outset we all believed DJ (as she was affectionately known) was going to be a nice horse, like her mum built to be a real speedster."
DJ's mum Dance Parade (by Personal Hope[USA]) only ever won over 1000 metres as did her mother Girl On The Run (AUS). Her half-brother Nick On The Run (Niccolo Polo[USA]) won five races up to a mile including the Group 3 VATC Autum Stakes. Girl On The Run herself was a half-sister to two stake winners in Power And Glory and Swell Time Girl.
Dance Parade herself has now left four winners from seven foals. She commenced her stud career in Australia where she raced and produced Angel Mia (Strategic [AUS]) to win twice up to 1300 metres and Paraded (Commands[AUS]) to win four races up to 1300.
She came across the Tasman in foal to Floral Dynamite (AUS) and produced Hayley Rose, who is the winner of four races up to 1400 metres and has been placed in the Listed Eclipse Stakes at Otago and the Listed Timaru Stakes.
Dance Parade was purchased by Lori for $2200 in foal to Any Suggestion (AUS) at the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling and Broodmare Sale. Dance Parade now has a striking filly by Bachelor Duke (USA) at foot, very much in the same mould as her half-sister, and if everything goes according to plan she will be sold at the 2015 Yearling Sale.
Any Suggestion (AUS) (Lion Hunter-Advisable) has now sired two two-year-old stakes winners as he is the sire of the Karaka Million winner Ockham's Razor. He is standing his fifth season at stud at Richill Stud in Matamata.
"I was drawn to Dance Parade, I went solely to the broodmare sales to buy a mare in foal to Thorn Park(AUS) and whilst waiting for that mare to come through the ring, saw Dance Parade in the ring and put my hand up.
"It was just love at first glimpse. I have always favoured breeding stayers over sprinters but thought she was a mare that just had such size and scope about her. I had also noted she had left a couple of winners in Australia and at that stage Hayley Rose had won one race and was looking promising."
Incidentally, Lori also purchased Hikurangi, the mare in foal to Thorn Park but the resulting foal subsequently died and another mare, Cent Packing (Centaine[AUS] –Tramaurea) is in foal to Fast'N'Famous (AUS) .
Fast forward to July 2012 and Ben and Noami Tappenden of Highbury Park made contact with the Joneses about leasing a mare that was a half-sister to a Hong Kong Derby winner, and ended up leaving with Dance Parade and her weanling, as well as the Fast'N'Famous weanling to prepare for the sales.
"On visiting the property at Te Kowhai and seeing both mare and weanling, we were so taken with the weanling that a decision was made to obtain both as a package deal. The aim wasto breed Dance Parade to Bachelor Duke in the 2012 breeding season and sell the filly at the 2013 Yearling sales.
Both yearlings the Any Suggestion (AUS)- Dance Parade filly and the Fast'N'Famous (AUS) – Cent Packing colt, went to the New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Sale this year in Highbury Park Stud's draft.
"We were obviously disappointed at the figure she made at the sales," said Lori, "but given it was a filly in the Festival it was always going to be difficult. But I believe that with all horses it's better to give them the opportunity and the breeder the fun of seeing them race than have them sitting in a paddock."
According to Ben Tappenden she was a lovely filly but does have a scar on her hind hock and that may have held her back.
"It was a very disappointing price for such a lovely filly. We really felt that we had given her away to Bryce Revell when she only fetched $5,500, but she will always be the first stakes winner we have sold, and we are thrilled that Lori has also got her first stakes winner."
At the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales this year Highbury Park will present their third draft and this time they are presenting at the National Sale as well as Select and Festival.
