It was a great weekend for the team at Trelawney Stud with winners all round.
"We had the two group winners on Saturday at Doomben - Famous Seamus (Elusive City[USA]- Clinique) our 31st Group One winner and Pretty Pins(Pins [AUS]-Lunar Tudor[AUS])," enthused Trelawney Stud's Cherry Taylor.
"Sancerre (O'Reilly –Vouvray) won at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, giving her some form and stake earnings to help her make the field for the forthcoming GroupOone Queensland Oaks, a race won by her mother, and at home Brent won the Otago Rally, so it was a great weekend for us.
"It was really exciting. Everybody wants to win all the big two and three year-old races, but it's great to breed horses that can compete later in their life. It just goes to prove that New Zealand is a great place to breed horses with good bones and strength that can carry on and race as older horses . We are a great place to breed those type of horses."
Famous Seamus won the Group One BTC Cup and Pretty Pins scored in the Group Three Chairman's Handicap.
"Famous Seamus is owned by our good friends Jim and Denise Simpso. They have bought a few horses off us over the years. He deserved his Group O - ne he has been an honest horse and had won at listed level so it was great to see him get a Group One," added Cherry.
In fact Famous Seamus has won four races at listed level including the Prime Ministers Cup and the Lightning Handicap twice, and he has been placed several times at group level.
He is the fourth Group One winner for his sire Elusive City, and is one of the last foals bred by Trelawney and Sam Kelt's Keltern Stud from the Dance Floor (USA) mare Clinique.
"We are quite good at selling the dams of Group One winners. You know if you buy one of our mares you have a good chance of producing a Group One winner - unfortunately I can't tell you which mares to buy but we have done it a few times now."
Clinique was an unraced daughter of the unraced Lomond(USA) mare Timeless Moment (IRE). She is also a half-sister to the well performed stakes- winning mare Ferragamo, and fellow stakes winner National Treasure.
As well as Famous Seamus she has left six other winners including Andashim also by Elusive City, a Group Three winner of seven races. Clinique produced three live foals after Famous Seamus - a colt by Iffraaj(IRE), Fast Eddie Sleven also by Elusive City who has been placed ,and a colt to Captain Rio (GB). She has since died.
Trelawney Stud still own Lunar Tudor ,the dam of Pretty Pins, and she is currently in foal to the horse that helped make them Breeders of the Year last year – Ocean Park.
"Pretty Pins is a mare that has always shown heaps of ability. She won three races at three and always raced in the best company. She was pretty close up in some stakes races as a three and four-year-old," according to Cherry.
"It's great to see that she is once again recovering some of that form that she showed as a three-year-old. We have tried to buy Pretty Pins back a couple of times. She is a half-sister to Allez Wonder, but were unsuccessful and instead we sent Lunar Tudor back to Pins and we now have a rising two-year-old full sister that has just been broken in. She will initially race here, and if she shows anything we will send her to Australia as well to try and get some black type there.
"Lunar Tudor (Miltary Plume-Moonstorm[Aus] was originally owned by Deborah Ho. She won 10 races including a Group Two Perth Cup . Deborah she sent her to Redoute's Choice (AUS) when he was only $40,000. She decided to quit the mare and we bought her for $200,000. The resulting Redoute's Choice foal was Allez Wonder and we sold her as a yearling to Bart Cummings for $600,000.
"She won the Group One Toorak Handicap and ran third in the Group One Queensland Oaks."
"After she foaled Allez Wonder she haemorrhaged and we thought we were going to lose her. She looked terrible and I wanted to put her down, but Brent wouldn't as he believed she had the will to live, and he was right, she did.
"She has had nine foals since then and she has haemorrhaged after each one. She has been a great broodmare though."
As well as the two stakes winners Lunar Tudor has produced the up and coming Captain Scott (Elusive City) and two other winners Breccia (Fastnet Rock [AUS]) and Perfect Maker. She is currently in foal to Ocean Park.
