Champion race horse trainer Murray Baker has many accomplishments in the thoroughbred industry and he can now add breeding a stakes winner to that impressive list.
Baker is the breeder of the Listed Great Easter Stakes winner Sucre a six-year-old Ishiguru(USA) mare who has now won 12 races and $224,938 in stakes.
"She's not a bad horse, not many mares win that many," said Baker when discussing the mare who has also been stakes placed four times.
"I still own her, but you can't race them all. I had her in work here, I thought she would take time so I asked Steve Ramsay if he knew anyone in the South Island that would want to lease her and he recommended Sean Bellew."
Bellew a real estate agent in Invercargill and president of the Southland Racing Club races Sucre is partnership with his wife Becky and The Board Syndicate. He trains a handful of horses at Ascot Park and Sucre is also his first stakes winner.
It was a momentous day for Bellew as he also trained Saperavious to win her sixth race on the same card at Riccarton, however as it was the start of the duck shooting season he had to be content to watch the races on his phone from his maimai near Winton. Another of his small team is Nurmi a Nom de Jeu half-brother to Sucre that Baker also thought would be better suited in the South Island.
Carrie (Danasinga[AUS]- Black Magic), a three-quarter sister to Singalong (Danasinga-Echostatic) the champion three-year-old filly in 2001, was trained by Baker for a stable client. She didn't win a race but was placed 15 times from 19 starts.
"He wasn't going to breed from her and as she is a three-quarter sister to Singalong, I decided to breed from her, I like to breed the odd one, and now she is in foal to Tavistock."
Her first foal was Frank King by Shinko King(IRE), who won one race, her next foal by Postponed(USA) was sold to Hong Kong, and Sucre is the third foal. Her next foal High Peak a colt by Align(AUS) is also a winner and her fifth foal is Nurmi named by Baker after the famous flying Finnish Olympian Paavo Nurmi.
She also has a two-year-old colt by Nom de Jeu as well and a yearling colt by Sahkee's Secret (GB) and is in foal to Tavistock.
Baker keeps the mare at his 25 acre property just outside Cambridge, and usually just sends her to stud somewhere local down the road, however he did send Carrie to Nom de Jeu (Montjeu[IRE]-Prized Gem)whom he trained to win the AJC Derby, further afield to Fairdale Stud in the Manawatu.
He has also been a supporter of another Group One stallion that he trained in Fully Fledged (Align[AUS]-Fledged[AUS]), and bred and raced the recent winner in Furuvik (ex I'llthinkaboutit).
Carrie is out of the four-race winning mare Black Magic, who produced three winners. She is by Kaapstad out of the stakes placed winning mare Echostatic, who produced nine winners from her 10 foals including the stakes winners Singalong (Danasinga[AUS]), Coup Ray (Exploding Prospect[AUS]), Penny Arcade (Straussbrook [USA]) and stakes placed Electrostatic (Elnadim[USA]).
Singalong has produced the Group Three winner Zacroona (Zabeel) and three other winners, while Penny Arcade has left the Listed Matamata Slipper winner Al Strada (Perfectly Ready[AUS]). Another daughter of Echostatic, Dance on Fire is the dam of the Group Two AJC Sapphire Stakes winner Fire Song (Senor Pete [USA]).
