Zabeel continues his impressive status as a broodmare sire

The legendary Zabeel
The legendary Zabeel

Pencarrow Stud were one of the original shareholders in the mighty Cambridge Stud stallion Zabeel and what a wonderful investment that has turned out to be.

In an earlier interview with the NZTBA, Leon Casey Pencarrow's manager, described Zabeel's blood as gold and stated that he is a unique horse, who put range, scope and stamina into his foals, and now his mares are producing some great crosses with some great stallions.

Already Zabeel has been the champion broodmare sire in Australia and New Zealand on three occasions. He is the dam sire of 26 individual Group One winners, including champions like Darci Brahma, Silent Achiever, Ocean Park, Dundeel, Dear Demi, Atlantic Jewel and so on. He is the dam sire of 1433 individual winners and 142 stakes winners in total. He is currently the second leading broodmare sire in Australia and third in New Zealand.

Fortunately for Pencarrow they sold very few of their Zabeel fillies and now have 11 broodmares in their band, with Grand Echezeaux, the dam of Darci Brahma and Burgundy undoubtedly the jewel in the crown. Her sister, Our Echezeaux is no slug either being the dam of Dolmabache.

Lafleur (Zabeel – Desert Lily [USA]) has left two stakes winners in Amaryllis and Papillo, and her two full sisters Zygadene and Mojave Aster are also in the broodmare band, as well as a full blood sister Pomellato (Zabeel – Diamond Habit[GB]). Crystalline (Zabeel-Clear Rose) has left the stakes placed winner Bass Strait and the list goes on.

Also on the list are two mares, Alpine and Stanica, who were represented by Hasselhoof and Makarska respectively, impressive winners at Ruakaka not once but twice in the last month.

Hasselhoof created quite an impression when at his second race day appearance he not only won by 11 lengths but he did it in the slashing time of 1.34.46 for 1600 metres, the fastest 1600 metres on that course in the last 20 years.

A three-year-old by Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock from the Donna Logan stable, he made his first race day appearance at Ruakaka a fortnight earlier and dished out a galloping lesson to beat his stablemate Silencer by nearly two lengths, with a further six lengths plus back to third place getter Bloodstream. Silencer came out and also won last Saturday beating his rivals by two and a half lengths.

Hasselhoof is out of the Zabeel mare Alpine, and was purchased by Logan from Pencarrow for $14,000 after he was passed in at the Select Sale in 2013. That particular year, Logan's daughter Sam was on the yearling staff at Pencarrow and earmarked the son of Tavistock and Alpine as the one she really liked from their draft.

Makarska is by Tavistock's barn mate Keeper out of the Zabeel mare Stanica. She is raced by Sir Peter Vela and has now won six races from the stable of Ken and Bev Kelso.

Hasselhoof is the sixth foal from Alpine, who has already left the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner in Vercors (Catbird[AUS]). She is also the dam of two other winners Huluava (Pins[AUS])and Wonderful Approach (Spartacus[IRE]). Huluava is also the dam of two winners. Alpine is currently not in foal, but has a Rip Van Winkle(IRE)colt destined for the sales at Karaka next summer. Her Exceed and Excel(AUS) yearling colt was sold to Bruce Perry Bloodstock for $120,000 early this year.

Alpine is a sister to the Sydney Cup runner up Manawa King and a half-sister to the former champion two-year-old Lord Ted. He won the Group One Ellerslie Sire's Produce Stakes and Group Three Wakefield Challenge Stakes as a two-year-old before competing in Australia where he was Group One placed.

She in turn is a granddaughter of Melody Belle a multiple stakes winner of 10 races and a descendant from the Sarten family's fabulous "Belle" family. Alpine was bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan.

Tavistock is now the sire of 27 individual winners and four stakes winners and five stakes performers. His oldest progeny are only three and include the Logan stable's leading three-year-old and Group One Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok'N'Barrell. From 10 starts he won six races, four of which were stakes races and he was second in the Group New Zealand Derby and third in Group One ATC Derby.

In the late Autumn another three-year-old star emerged in Werther, who recorded a win in the Group Two Championship Stakes at Ellerslie before running second in the Group One South Australian Derby. That form earned him a trip to Queensland where he won the Group Two BRC Eagle Farm Cup against the older horses and ran second in the Queensland Derby.

Like Hasselhoof, Werther is out of a Zabeel mare in Bagoflollies, in fact seven of Tavistock's 27 individual winners are out of Zabeel mares. They are the Group One performer Imperial Lass (Tricia Ann), who ran third in the Queensland Oaks, and the Ethereal Stakes, and Diamond Valores (Special Diamond) who was third in the ATC Gloaming Stakes, along with Effectav (Sound Effects), Margin Trader (Power and Might) and Ryker (Chelse).

Harking back to Makarska, she is the fourth foal of the Group One placed Stanica. A winner of four races she ran second in the Avondale Cup. Her first foal by Danzero(AUS) Stanica Star has been a winner, and her third foal Rhythm To Spare (Pins[AUS]) is the winner of six races including the Group Three R A Lee Stakes at Morphetville. He is trained by Mike Moroney in Melbourne.

Stanica is out of the unraced Sunday Silence mare Love Connection who was imported into New Zealand by the Velas. Love Connection is out of Pleasure Connection (Danzig Connection) who won eight races in the States, three of them at Listed level.

Stanica is in foal to O'Reilly and has a weanling filly by All Too Hard, which will probably be retained by Pencarrow, no doubt to add to the racing team and eventually go into the broodmare band, thus retaining that golden Zabeel bloodline.
