Waikato Stud suffered a major blow last weekend with the passing of No Excuse Needed (USA), and the New Zealand breeding industry lost another well performed sire.
The son of the former European Champion two-year-old and successful sire Machiavellian (GB) out of Nawaiet - he was just 17 years old when he suffered a paddock accident at the stud and had to be put down.
A successful racehorse in the United Kingdom he commenced stud duties in 2005 and was the leading first season sire in 2006/7. The following year he left the Karaka Million winner, and Champion two-year-old Vincent Mangano and was crowned the champion sire of two-years for the 2007/8 season.
The momentum continued and in the 2008/9 season he produced the millionaire racehorse Daffodil for Waikato Stud. She was the Champion three-year-old filly of her year and the NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year, with wins in the group one Australian Oaks, and the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas. At four she won the group one Windsor Park Plate before being placed in the Caulfield Cup.
Waikato Stud were fortunate enough to produce and race another group one daughter of No Excuse Needed in I Do, and only days before her father's demise she produced her first foal, a colt by Savabeel. I Do won 15 races in her career including last season's group one Makfi Classic and five other black type events.
No Excuse Needed who is currently second on the New Zealand Sires Premiership is known for leaving hardy racehorses and the two open handicappers No Excuse Maggie (7 wins), and Justanexcuse (10 wins), are among his list of 17 stakes winners.
The others include Timy Tap (5 wins),Take The Rap, Lesley Brook, Snow Excuse, Grand Dancer, Under The Sun, Miss Millbrook, Take Another Chance and Champagne Needed to name a few.
In all No Excuse Needed has sired 208 winners from 353 runners in Australasia and Asia, and provided some great thrills for the team at Waikato Stud.
