The winner of the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes, Serious Satire (More Than Ready[USA]- Zarzuela) is shaping up to be one serious racehorse.
At only her third start she blitzed a strong field of well performed three-year-old fillies, to beat the well performed Serena Miss by a half a length.
She commenced her racing career in June on a very heavy track at Avondale and finished a very game second, and returned to the track at Hastings on Makfi Challenge Stakes day to easily win a special conditions three-year-old, before her success in the Gold Trail.
Serious Satire is raced by her breeder David Paykel and his wife Angela. He also bred and raced her mother Zarzuela.
"She is a very exciting filly and we were thrilled with the fabulous win," enthused Paykel a member of the Auckland branch of the NZTBA.
Serious Satire is the second foal of the Zabeel Stakes winning mare Zarzuela. As a three-year-old Zarzuela won the Group Two ARC Championship Stakes, Great Northern Guineas and the Herbie Dyke Waikato Guineas, before running fourth in the New Zealand Derby and third in the New Zealand Oaks.
Her first foal by Redoute's Choice (AUS), Tabreek colt was purchased by Angus Gold and went to South Africa and won easily at his first start. He had a few things go amiss, and it is hoped that he might make a comeback now as a four-year-old.
The next mating was with the Southern Halo (USA) sire More Than Ready(USA).
"I just felt that he was going so well, and was underrated at that stage, I discussed it with Michael Otto and he thought it would be good to get a bit more speed into the pedigree and you would have to say it has had the desired result," added Paykel.
Her next mating was with Fastnet Rock (AUS) and that colt sold for $700,000 at the Sydney Easter sale this year to Boomer Bloodstock. She returned to Fastnet Rock and on September 2nd produced another lovely big colt, at Willow Park in Scone, where all Paykel's mare reside during the breeding season. After they have foaled and been mated they return to Trelawney Stud in Cambridge.
Zarzuela is currently under service to Exceed and Excel(AUS).
"I am hoping for a filly and I will probably keep that too, I kept Serious Satire as an insurance if I lost the mare, and I sold the grandam Star Satire after she produced Zarzuela.
Zarzuela is a half-sister to Satin Shoes (Flying Spur[AUS]) whose six wins included the Group Two ATC Silver Slipper Stakes. Their dam Star Satire(Volksraad[IRE]) was the Champion three-year-old filly of her year, winner of the Group One Otaki WFA Stakes and four other races.
This family has also recently produced the CJC Stewards winner Soubrettes and the Listed Stakes winner Shoboard.
Star Satire is out of the Kaapstad mare Satirical who was a half-sister to the Stakes winners Silver Nymph, Silver Wraith and Silverello. Another half-sister produced the Group One winner Ray's Hope and Star Defence.
"She was a lovely individual, not completely correct in front, and she did have a periosteal strip. She's been everywhere and I think that has helped her cope. She accepts everything nothing phases her, we had to be patient with her. "
"Darren Weatherly broke her in, then she returned to Trelawney, after that she spent some time with Russell Rogers on the water walker, before going back to Trelawney. Last summer she spent a few months with Catherine Cleghorn on the beach at Waiuku, before another spell at Trelawney and on to Mark Brooks for pre-training then finally ending up at Stephen Marsh's.
"We have our sights set on the 1000 Guineas, with maybe a start in the Sarten Memorial on Labour Day on the way. I just hope she can get through all those races and carry on."
Paykel currently has four mares that he breeds from and they are all mated in Australia, including Alzira (Bertolini (IRE)- Alacrity), who has just produced a filly to Medaglia d'Oro, and will visit Shooting to Win(AUS).
"She is the only filly I got out of Alacrity, and she won a race at Matamata but the race was cancelled, she never raced again."
David Paykel grew up in one of New Zealand's foremost business and breeding families. His father Maurice and Uncle Sir Woolf Fishe established
Fisher and Paykel. Maurice enjoyed success as an owner and breeder in partnership with his good friend Bob Morris of Cambridge, while Sir Woolf and Lady Fisher (nee Joyce Paykel) established the iconic Ra Ora Stud. It seemed a natural sequence of events that David would follow in their footsteps.
However after a few disastrous attempts in the 60's he gave up breeding horses until the 90's when he decided to get a little serious about it again, and purchased Daybreak Lover (AUS)(Duke Ellington [IRE] –Good Exchange [AUS]) in foal to Grosvenor and that foal was Alacrity.
Alacrity, the 1996 Filly of the Year both here and in Australia, won five races including the Group One New Zealand Oaks and the Group Two Sir Tristram Classic.
"She was probably the best foal I bred out of Daybreak Express. I also bred from Alacrity and she in turn only had four live foals before she died, leaving a Group Two winner in Pendragon."
"After my success racing Alacrity I bought Star Satire (Volksraad –Satirical) for $130,000 from the Karaka Premier draft of Windsor Park Stud. She won five races for me including Group One Otaki-Maori Weight-for-age. She was retired to stud after being galloped on in the Group One New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes" he recalled.
However the dynasty of Star Satire lives on and a Group One winner could soon be added to her family.
