Wellington NZTBA branch member David Wallace was probably destined to be in the thoroughbred breeding game with a pedigree almost as strong as that of the recent stakes winner he bred in No More Tears (Darci Brahma- Ocean of Tears).
"I was very lucky that as a young fella my grandad (Ardsley Stud's Jim Wallace Senior), would lend me a mare and a nomination to Lord Ballina, so since those days I have been hooked," enthused Wallace, a commercial lawyer in Wellington".
"It is the first stakes winner I have bred. It's fantastic my wife Madelaine and I are very happy, we also have a 20% share in the filly. I liked her so much as a yearling and when Go Racing bought her at the Select Sale I asked if I could keep 20%."
No More Tears is raced by the Go Racing Don't Cry Syndicate and is trained at Cambridge by Stephen Marsh. She recently won the Listed Soliloquy Stakes for three year-old fillies, at Ellerslie, after finishing a close fourth in the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes earlier in the month. This was only her third race day appearance, when she debuted in May she won the Listed Hamilton Vets Equine Stakes at Te Rapa.
She rounded off a great weekend for The Oaks stallion Darci Brahma, who also sired the Group One Windsor Park Plate winner Julinsky Prince (ex Julinsky Princess) and in Melbourne her close relation Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock[AUS]-Hips Don't Lie) broke through for a stakes win in the Listed William Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley.
No More Tears is the third foal of the Minardi (USA) mare Procure a daughter of Centaine(AUS) and Getting There (AUS), and the second winner.
"I bought her from the NZ Bloodstock Broodmare sale in August 2012 on the recommendation of my brother Michael, I was overseas at the time, and he called me and said he really liked this mare. He knew that I was a big fan of Hips Don't Lie (Stravinsky) and she was in foal to Darci Brahma, and with the luck of the Irish we got her very cheaply for $30,000," Wallace said.
"I sent her to Showcasing as I have a share in him, and we sold the resulting filly earlier this year to Lance Noble for $70,000. She has a Savabeel yearling I own half of with Anthony Milthen of Rosemont Stud that will go to the Sydney Easter Sales. She missed last season but she is in foal to Fastnet Rock(AUS) so I am super excited about that."
While Ocean of Tears only raced once she is a half-sister to eight winners including the Group Two winner Hips Don't Lie (5 wins) and the stakes placed winners Procurement, Azevedo, and Acquired, being out of the winning Centaine mare Procure.
She in turn is in a half-sister to the stakes winners Rhythm, Tristachine, and Western Music, and they are out of the stakes winning Jungle Boy (GB) mare Getting There.
It is a family with a lot of black type and according to Wallace has a lot of upside.
"She is a nice filly with a lot of upside, and on the same day No More Tears won the Soliloquy Stakes, Hips Don't Lie's daughter Lake Geneva, won the Listed William Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley. Lake Geneva was group placed at every start as a two-year-old including a third in the Blue Diamond and a third in the Slipper last season".
"All of Hips Don't Lie's foals have sold for over a million in Sydney, and they have all been by Fastnet Rock, which is partly why I went to Coolmore and entered into a foal share with Fastnet Rock. It's a family on the move."
Wallace has an interest in around 10 mares in partnerships and various ownership models. He has shares in Showcasing, Reliable Man and Sacred Falls and is delighted to already have a mare in foal to that young stallion.
"At any one time I may have up to 20-25 horses, I buy and sell a lot and a lot of these are owned within the family," he added.
David is the son of Mary and Jim Wallace junior, and grew up on Ardsley Stud in Masterton. His brother Michael, a former NZTBA Sunline Scholarship winner, is now a successful bloodstock agent, and his sister Rachael is also involved in the industry.
"It's great having a bloodstock agent for a brother when you want to buy and sell, he is a good judge and he knows what I like," added Wallace who was in Singapore in business when he spoke to the NZTBA.
