Wairarapa couple Les and Janine Wallace are loving every minute racing their talented mare Skyweka.
The Wallaces bred the daughter of Pentire who has now won three of her eight starts from the Tony Pike stable, including a runaway victory at Otaki on 4th January, picking up a New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series bonus of $11,500 along the way. Last January Skyweka also collected a midweek $11,500 bonus when she won a 1600m maiden at Avondale.
The biggest thrill is sharing the victories as part of a 36-strong syndicate known as the Galloping Wekas.
"Many of them are friends and family," a delighted Janine Wallace said.
"Our son Joe, who works for Basketball New Zealand, has a number of his mates involved.
"We were mindful of what people could afford, and we have syndicate members that pay as little as $12.50 a month.
"Joe has set up a website and a Facebook page for the syndicate and it is a great way to keep everyone updated."
Skyweka will now head toward the $40,000 Douro Cup at Trentham on January 23, where she is sure to have plenty of supporters on course.
Wallace, who previously worked for the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, was quick to point out the importance of the Pearl Series bonus for fillies and mares.
"It is a great initiative and it keeps people breeding from mares like her," she said.
"I couldn't speak more highly of the whole Pike family. Tony does a great job, but it is a real team effort with his wife Kirsten, children Molly and Oliver and parents Wayne and Vicky.
"We've been participants in the thoroughbred industry for a long time and it's a demanding industry where that family support is really crucial." – NZ Racing Desk
