New Derby winner for Sir Patrick and family

Sir Patrick Hogan with Tavistock
Sir Patrick Hogan with Tavistock

Breeding Derby winners is not something new for Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan of Cambridge Stud, they have bred or co-bred quite a few, but in Sir Patrick's opinion breeding the Australian Derby winner is the ultimate.

Sir Patrick's tally in that event is three, Tristarc (Sir Tristram[IRE]- Renarc) in 1985, Don Eduardo (Zabeel-Diamond Lover) in 2002 and the latest one Tavago (Tavistock-Sara Ann) in 2016, one each from each of his champion stallions.

Tavago is the sixth Group One winner that Sir Patrick has bred or co-bred this season and the Sydney Autumn carnival isn't over yet. His other winners include the Australasian Cup, Turnbull Stakes and BMW winner Preferment (Zabeel – Better Alternative) and the VRC Derby and Rosehill Guineas winner Tarzino (Tavistock-Zarzino).

"I have bred the winners of a number of Derbies but the ATC Derby is the Derby of all Derbies, it's the ultimate, and to nail another one is such a thrill. This is after all the big Championships Carnival," he said with obvious pride.

"For Tavistock whose oldest crop are only four-year-olds it is a real feather in his cap, with Tarzino winning the VRC Derby and Rosehill Guineas, it's been a huge year for him. In the past three weeks he has had four Group One winners, Volkstok'N' Barrell in New Zealand, Werther in Hong Kong and Tarzino and Tavago in Sydney.

"We have been swamped with enquiries and applications and since the Derby there has been immense interest from Australian breeders, but as I have said all along applications close on April 30th and I will announce his fee once the applications have closed."

Tavistock (Montjeu[IRE]-Upstage[GB]) was bred by Bloomsbury Stud. He won six races, two at Group One level including the Group One Mudgeway Partsworld Stakes and it was this race that first brought him to the attention of Sir Patrick and prompted him to look into his female line. It was a family he knew well, Upstage being a daughter of Pedestal the dam of Kowtow from whom he had bred Precedence with Bloomsbury Stud.

Pedestal is a daughter of the sire and stakes producing blue hen mare Mrs Moss, and thus a half-sister to the successful sires Jupiter Island, and Precocious. It is a fabulous stakes winning producing family. When Tavistock easily won his second Group One race the Waikato Draught Sprint, he mentioned to the horse's owners that when it came to standing the horse at stud that he would like 'to throw his hat in the ring'. Subsequently on retirement Tavistock joined the stallion ranks at Cambridge Stud in 2010, and at the time of writing has produced 70 individual winners, seven of who are stakes winners, four at Group One level, and six stakes placed performers.

"We did it with Sir Tristram (IRE), and didn't expect to do it with Zabeel but we did, and we certainly didn't think it would probably happen again but it did and it's a great thrill for Justine and I and a great achievement for all the staff at Cambridge Stud".

"We have had a unique run of stallions with Sir Tristram, then Zabeel and now Tavistock, all getting a Australian Derby winner and for the latest winner to be New Zealand bred, New Zealand owned and New Zealand trained is a fantastic result for all of New Zealand.

"It's great for Trent and Natalie and I have to thank you Michelle (the writer) and Mary McCarty for selecting the horse for its first time owners Craig Oldfield, Pam Hatchard, Keith Banks and Ross Taylor and giving it to Trent, because who knows what might have happened if the circumstances had been different."

Tavago has now won three races from seven starts and in excess of $1.3million. He commenced racing in October in a maiden at Avondale where he was narrowly beaten over 1400 metres. Three weeks later he won over 1600 metres at Te Rapa, before taking out the Group Three Wellington Stakes at Levin over the same distance.

He was put aside and freshened for the Listed NZB Karaka Insurance mile, where he was involved in a tight and tense finish which was the subject of two unsuccessful protests. At his next start he failed miserably in the Group Two Waikato Guineas, before running a late finishing sixth in the New Zealand Derby. With 1200 metres to run, he was 25 lengths behind the leader, prompting his jockey Noel Callow to comment after the race that at the 1200 metre mark he needed binoculars to see the leader!

A decision was made to press on to the Australian Derby and after a 24 hour plane delay he arrived in Sydney 48 hours before the race. In the hands of Tommy Berry he sat up in fourth position until the straight then kicked clear for home, winning by three and a half lengths going away.

Tavago is the fourth foal of the unraced Stravinsky(USA) mare Sara Ann, who has left two other winners. She in turn is a sister to La Sizeranne, the winner of six races including the Group Two Queensland Tatt's Winter Handicap and the Group Three ARC Kings Plate, and the dam of Za Moulin Rouge, the Listed SAJC Queen Adelaide Stakes winner.

Napa Sky, the stakes placed winner of three races is another sister, and Sara Ann is also a blood sister to Estelle Collection (Stravinsky- Ana Zeel) who won the Group Three Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley and went on to become the mother of Lankan Rupee – whose 10 wins include eight stakes wins, five of which were at Group One level. She is also a half-sister to the Group One placed Imperial Lass (also by Tavistock) and Joy's Choice.

Sara Ann is out of the Zabeel mare Tricia Ann, a winner of two races who was placed in the Group Two Championship Stakes at Auckland. She is a three-quarter sister to the VRC Derby winner and successful stallion, the West Australian Derby winner National Gallery, Kyrie Eleison, and Garfunkel, being out of the unraced Hermes mare Gay Poss.

This family has produced a whole host of stakes winners for Cambridge Stud, far too many to list here, since Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan bought into it over 50 years ago.

"It's been a great family, it's never bred out and has produced stakes winners nearly every generation. It's the good old "Rose" family of Billy Alexander that Liz Pollard is also breeding from, and had a stakes winner in Queen's Rose only last season".

"Justine and I bought Sweet Wren (Able Seaman[GB]- Meer Rose) at a deceased estate sale by tender from the public trust. Colin Hayes was the under bidder, she was described as being not in foal, but we consequently ended up with a filly Sweet Time (by Summertime[GB]) and she is the dam of Gay Poss".

"My late sister Pat Kelly owned it with Justine originally, then Pat's late husband Arthur shared in the breeding as well, now it's their son John and his wife Chris that are our partners in Sara Ann."

Sara Ann is safely in foal to Tavistock and has a weanling Tavistock filly who Sir Patrick thinks he might just have to keep.
