Imposing Lass winning the Schweppes (Bm78)

Always up for an adventure, Australasian travel industry trailblazer Peter Newsom decided around 25 years ago to invest in some bloodstock in New Zealand, and recently he was credited with his latest New Zealand bred Stakes winner Imposing Lass (Makfi[GB]- Imposingly).
Imposing Lass completed a hat trick of wins this autumn when she won the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet over 1800 metres as a lead into the Group One Queensland Oaks next month. Trained in Sydney by Bjorn Baker, she had previously led all the way to win two class events, one at Rosehill and the other at Warwick Farm, in her current campaign.
Prior to that, in the early summer months, she raced twice for a second on debut, followed by a maiden, before being put aside for a spell and her autumn campaign.
The attractive bay filly is the fourth southern hemisphere Stakes winner for the Dubawi (IRE) stallion Makfi who stands at Westbury Stud, and joins the Group One winners Sofia Rose and Marky Mark, and Listed winner Hursley as Stakes winners from his first crop.
Imposing Lass is the fifth foal of the Zabeel mare Imposingly(AUS), herself a winner of one race. She is a three-quarter sister to the Group One winners Champagne, St Reims and Stakes placed Sursum Corda, being out of the Defensive Play (USA) mare Quiz Queen, from L'Quiz(USA). She was purchased by Newsom for his City Bloodstock Limited partnership which includes himself, and mates Mac Whiteman and Tony Wales.
Her first foal is the Redoute's Choice (AUS) mare Our Squeezer who won two races before joining the partnership's broodmare band, while her next mating produced Full of Spirit by Flying Spur(AUS). She won four races including the Group Three ATC Adrian Knox Stakes and is now in the broodmare band at Haunui Farm.
The next mating was to Red Ransom (USA) which produced Zaberto who the company raced to win two races, while her 2010 mating to Duke of Marmalad, Lady Cumquat, won two races in New Zealand including the Group Three Manawatu Classic, before relocating to Melbourne where she has won one more race. She is also still raced by the partnership which is managed for Newsom by Westbury Stud's General Manager, Russell Warwick.
According to Warwick, Newsom and his partners like to breed to race, and they have had a bit of luck.
"When Makfi arrived I thought he would be a perfect mating for Imposingly and we sent her there and she left Imposing Lass, I liked the mating so much I sent back again and she produced another filly in Bonneval".
"They like to keep them to race, but the two Makfi fillies being half-sisters to two Stakes winners were highly sought after and fetched $120,000 and $150,000 respectively," said Warwick.
Both fillies were purchased by good judges, with Paul Willetts buying Imposing Lass and Baker Racing buying Bonneval, who has had one start for one win this season.
Following two visits to Makfi, Imposingly was mated with Redwood(GB) and returned to Australia where she has produced a Camelot(GB) colt and is in foal to Adelaide (IRE). She will return to Makfi this season.
"Peter purchased Imposingly from Rob McAnulty, when she had finished racing, the partnership likes to keep their broodmare band to a minimum and they have had quite a bit of success over the years".
"The first horse they had was Gold City, (Gold and Ivory[USA]- Teton Moss[AUS]) who won eight races, four of them Stakes races and ran second to Octagonal in the Group One Australian Cup. Unfortunately she dropped dead in the tie up stalls after winning a race at Matamata."
"Then they purchased Real Trier and she produced Sedecrem, Mount Street and Real Flyer for them, and another good horse he bred was Storm Signal. Much to his delight Real Trier was named Auckland Broodmare of the Year by the NZTBA's Auckland branch for the deeds of Sedecrem and Mount Street, and she is buried at Westbury Stud."
Sedecrem was the real deal as a racehorse, the son of Faltaat (USA), he was named the Champion Older Miler in New Zealand in 2003-04. He raced through until he was a seven-year-old and won 13 races including two at two. His wins included Group One victories in the ARC Easter Handicap and the Waikato Draught Sprint twice.
Mount Street from the first crop of Kilimanjaro (GB) was raced by the partners in City Bloodstock and won five races in New Zealand before heading to Singapore where he won two including the Group Three Singapore Chairman's Trophy. He ran second in the Group One New Zealand Derby, Group Two Avondale Guineas, and third in Group Three Waikato Guineas. In Singapore he was also placed in the Singapore Gold Cup and Queen Elizabeth Cup twice.
By comparison Real Flyer a son of Volksraad(IRE), won five races for Newsom and Whiteman, and ran third in the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes.
City Bloodstock have four mares under Warwick's management including Imposingly and her Redoute's Choice daughter Our Squeezer who has a I Am Invincible (AUS) filly at foot and is in foal to Declaration of War(USA). They also have a Generous(GB) mare Impinge, who has left two winners including the Group Three placed winner Jalan Jalan. After missing to Redwood, Impinge is in foal to Adelaide.
