Waikato Stud’s young sire Ardrossan(AUS) was represented by his first Australian stakes winner when Beau Dazzler (NZ) (Ardrossan) won the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
He is the fourth stakes winner for the promising young Redoute’s Choice sire after he produced three two-year-old New Zealand stakes winners as a freshman sire last season. They were Codigo (Listed Wellesley Stakes), Saltcoats (Listed Futurity Stakes) and Loch Katrine(Listed Champagne Stakes).
A graduate of the NZB Karaka yearling sales Beau Dazzler was selected for Toowoomba trainers Tony and Maddysen Sears by Paul Moroney and Catheryne Bruggeman for $85,000. He debuted with a close second at Toowoomba in late November before heading to Eagle Farm to go one better in the Phelan Ready Stakes.
Beau Dazzler was bred by the Dewar Partnership managed by Wairarapa bloodstock agent Bruce Perry, and according to him was established with the intention of getting Ardrossan’s progeny into Australia.
“Everyone in the partnership is a shareholder in Ardrossan(AUS),” Perry said.
“Between us we put up nine nominations, and to give the horse some support we decided to purchase nine mares.”
The partnership consists of Brown Thoroughbreds, JML Bloodstock, Joyce Thoroughbreds, David and Nicki Wilson and Bruce and Anna Perry.
“All the partners were involved in racing Ardrossan(AUS) except Tony Joyce who had previously raced horses with Max Brown and he decided to buy a share in Ardrossan when he retired to stud,” Perry explained.
“We didn’t spend a lot of money but bought mares we thought would suit Ardrossan and it has proved the case. They were not expensive mares but nice mares, you can spend a lot of money on mares but in the end the stallion has to be performing as well.
“From the first crop we have three in Australia and one in Hong Kong with Jamie Richards, and we kept some fillies that we are racing.
“In the second crop we sold three at the sales including Beau Dazzler for $85,000, Tachyon to Waikato Bloodstock (Hong Kong) for $260,000 and Maracutu to David Ellis for $190,000.
“Maracutu was a winner at Te Rapa earlier in the month, and his year older sister Carajillo has been placed at two and three.
“We have retained a couple of two-year-old fillies, and they are in work with Stephen Marsh, Sam Logan and Sam Mynott and we have five yearlings to sell at Karaka this year including a full brother to Beau Dazzler.”
Beau Dazzler is the third foal from the Pentire(GB)mare Pwerfect. The partnership purchased Pwerfect and her half-sister Katherine Wright from Valachi Downs for $1500 and $2400 respectively.
Pwerfect was in foal to War Decree(USA) when they purchased her and that foal Fortunate War has been placed in Australia. The partnership then sent her to Ardrossan(AUS) and she produced a colt who was injured in a paddock accident and was subsequently euthanized.
After Beau Dazzler, she returned to Ardrossan(AUS) and that foal, also a colt, is the yearling that is in Book 2 at Karaka in Lansdowne Park’s draft. She has since produced another Ardrossan (AUS) foal and is back in foal to him.
Pwerfect was an unplaced mare, as was her dam Shower Of Roses(GB), however she was a half-sister to Gravitation a group two winner at Goodwood. There are a number of European stakes winners dotted throughout the family including the European Champion stayer and stallion Fame and Glory.
“The Dewar Partnership is going strong, and we may even look at expanding it,” said Perry.
“It has been somewhat self-funding and has achieved what we wanted by getting the horses out there. We all had faith in the horse from day one and we wanted to help him and thankfully we have been well rewarded.”
Footnote: Beau Dazzler is currently number one in order of entry for the Karaka Million 2YO, and there is a strong possibility he may make the trip from Queensland. Maracutu is seventh in the order of entry.
