Q. What can I win with the Thoroughbred Bonus Scheme?
A. Thoroughbred Bonus Scheme (TBS) Bonuses fall into two categories:
Category A Bonus: $15,000
Category B Bonus: $7,500
In most cases, Category A bonuses will be allocated to races run on Saturdays and Public Holidays and Category B bonuses will be allocated to races run on weekdays and Sundays.

Q. Are the Bonuses for winners only or are they divided among all TBS-qualified placegetters in bonus races?
A. Bonuses are paid to the Owners and Trainers of TBS-qualified horses placed 1st, 2nd & 3rd. and to the Nominator of the winning horse.
Nominators receive 10% of the total Bonus, the remaining 90% being paid to the Owners and Trainers on a 70-20-10% split.
Q. When are entries taken for TBS?
A. Horses are entered for TBS after they become yearlings and before they turn two. Entries close each year on 30 April; late entries are accepted up until 31 July each year. Purchasers of two-year-olds from the South Island Sale (usually held in early August) are given a short period of extra time to enter these horses in TBS. Please note that these deadlines are strictly applied.
Q. What will it cost to enter my horse?
A. The entry fee is $1,125 incl GST which must be paid in full by 30 April. The late entry fee of $2,000 incl GST can be paid up to 31 July, the day before the horses officially become two-year-olds.
Q. Can I enter my horses after they turn two?
A. No, the last day on which they can ever be entered for TBS is 31 July - with the sole exception of two-year-olds purchased from the South Island Sale, held in early August.
Q. Which horses can be nominated for TBS?
A.
- Any thoroughbred horse foaled in New Zealand is eligible for entry until it officially turns two years old; and
- Any thoroughbred horse born offshore which is sold at public auction in New Zealand prior to becoming a two-year-old in New Zealand; and
- Any thoroughbred horse conceived in New Zealand but born offshore, provided it is returned to New Zealand before becoming officially one-year-old in New Zealand.
